On Monday, a shooter went on a rampage in the Canadian city of Montreal. The shooting spree left three victims dead, one of whom was a police officer. The shooter has been identified as one Seth Hatfield, who reportedly drove from his native Alberta to Quebec before the shooting. The shooting started in a Montreal grocery store; the gunman was later killed by police. And, yes, the shooting happened in a predominantly Jewish neighborhood in Montreal.

A suspect armed with a long gun opened fire on Monday at a Montreal hotel, killing a police officer before officers returned fire, killing him, police said. A civilian also died but it wasn’t immediately clear who fired that shot.

The police chief, Fady Dagher, said a second officer was seriously injured in the shooting in the city’s Côte-des-Neiges neighbourhood but is in stable condition.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) has an update page on the incident. They are reporting that the shooter's manifesto has been found, as a Quebec news site confirms (translated from French):

“Be steadfast, move forward, and KILL THEM ALL!” wrote Seth Hatfield in conclusion to his 104-page document. The text was being thoroughly analyzed by police on Monday, in the hours following the tragedy that left three dead.

It is unclear who the young man is proposing to kill. According to our sources, Hatfield has been driving from Alberta in recent days. Investigators believe he espouses an ideology similar to that of involuntary celibates, or "incels."

In his lengthy text, which our investigative team was able to consult, he deplores "the state of affairs regarding young people (approximately under 30 years old) who live in highly developed Western countries."

He denounces the fate of a majority of men, whom he calls "ordinary men." He contrasts them with a small number of "brutes," those who are supposedly preferred by women because of their attractive physique.

Another report, from the CBC, also ties the shooter to "incel" subculture.

The shooter has been linked to the misogynistic "incel" (involuntary celibate) subculture.

Members of the group commonly express exasperation over their inability to find a romantic or sexual partner, sometimes blaming women.

Radio-Canada was able to confirm that the shooter distributed a violent incel manifesto targeting women. The manifesto called for a violent revolution, invoking masculinist arguments.

The full text of the manifesto has not been released, but it reportedly attacks feminism, capitalism, liberalism, and pornography for society's ills, while calling for an armed revolution.

That's what we know so far. There is still an investigation underway.

Shootings of this sort aren't common in Canada. Still, there have been a couple of major incidents in the last few years, most notably in Nova Scotia in April of 2020, when a nut named Gabriel Wortman killed 22 people in a 13-hour rampage before being killed by police, and in February, 2026, in British Columbia, when one Jesse Van Rootselaar killed her mother and brother in their home before going on a shooting rampage at a nearby school. There have been several other incidents as well.
