It's no secret that the Democratic Party, once the party of Harry Truman, John F. Kennedy, and Zell Miller, has been taken over in large part by far-left, "Democratic Socialist" nutcases. There are exceptions; Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) comes to mind. But too many Democrats are now proclaiming themselves "Democratic Socialists," from New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY-14) to New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
These people follow an agenda that would take the United States to rack and ruin, and as it happens, there is an actual organization called the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), and their proposed agenda is a laundry list of stupid.
Earlier this month, the Democratic Socialists of America’s top leadership met for an in-person meeting of their National Political Committee (NPC), the DSA’s governing authority. The result of the meeting was “Workers Deserve More!”, a rebooted platform for the organization featuring a host of radical proposals. The document commits DSA to scrapping the U.S. Senate, “abolishing the carceral forces of the capitalist state,” defunding the Department of War, amnesty for all immigrants, and “replac[ing] the President and Supreme Court with an executive and judiciary chosen by and subordinate to Congress.”
In other words, the DSA would fold up the Constitution and chuck it, establishing, in effect, a new Soviet republic where America once stood. Let's take a little closer look at those items, shall we?
Scrapping the United States Senate. Not only would this require a constitutional amendment, which is hardly likely - not that the DSA has any intention of retaining any aspects of the Constitution in any case - but it would effectively destroy the founding principle of federalism. The states, now, all have an equal voice in the Senate; each state, no matter how large or small, has two Senators. This would also kick the electoral process of electing our presidents into a cocked hat, which brings us to:
Replacing the President and Supreme Court with an "executive and judiciary chosen by and subordinate to Congress," by which they mean the House of Representatives, because the Senate would be abolished. No more would there be even the pretense of judicial independence. The "executive" may as well be a stuffed monkey under this system. Congress would be a panel of dictators, with no check or balance on their power. Oh, and DSA is all in favor of ranked-choice voting, too, which, as we have learned to our frustration here in Alaska, tends to favor the leftist candidates.
Abolishing the "carceral forces of the capitalist state," by which they mean scrapping the prison system and any law enforcement. That wouldn't last, of course; socialists always need some kind of secret police to round up dissenters. In the meantime, every thug, murderer, and worse currently incarcerated would be given a pat on the head and set free.

Defunding the War Department. No more military; no more shield of men with guns standing between the citizens and unfriendly forces in the world. Now, let's be real about this one; the DSA would still retain a military, carefully hand-picked to suit the DSA's priorities, and that new military's guns would be pointed in, not out; that's always the way with socialist states.
Finally: Amnesty for all immigrants. No matter who they are, or what they have been up to, presumably - and no doubt the DSA would throw the doors open wide, in a gesture that would make the late, unlamented Biden administration look like the worst kind of pikers.

It's tempting to dismiss these people as simple cranks, nuttier than squirrel poo. But remember: One of them is now the Mayor of New York City. One of them is in the House of Representatives. One may very well be the next mayor of the District of Columbia, and one of them, the daffy old Bolshevik from Vermont, is in the Senate. We should be aware of what they are doing, what they want to do, and while they are nuts - oh, yes, they are nuts - we should not just dismiss them out of hand.
