Never let it be said that Secretary of War Pete Hegseth is one to shy away from a challenge. He's been in the field and has the dust on his boots to show for it. As Secretary of War, he's shown that he's not afraid of mixing it up with Congressmen and Senators, not even when - maybe especially when - they ask dumb questions during a hearing.
Democrat Congressman Pete Aguilar (CA-33) is one such. In a recent hearing on the War Department's 2027 budget request, Rep. Aguilar chose to hammer Secretary Hegseth on Operation Epic Fury, the state of affairs with Iran, and the meaning of the term "cease-fire." And, as we might expect, Rep. Aguilar got taken to school.
Secretary Hegseth just shut down Democrat Rep. Pete Aguilar’s stuttering gotcha questions with a simple lesson on what the word “ceasefire” actually means.

Secretary Hegseth just shut down Democrat Rep. Pete Aguilar’s stuttering gotcha questions with a simple lesson on what the word “ceasefire” actually means.
AGUILAR: “Mr. Secretary, on that same day, April 29th, you testified that the current ceasefire meant that 60 day calendar with the War Powers Resolution was paused. Who were the parties to the ceasefire?”
HEGSETH: “Well, right now we are in that same ceasefire, as of right now.”
AGUILAR: “That wasn’t the question. Who are the parties to the ceasefire?”
HEGSETH: “That would be the United States and the regime in Iran.”
AGUILAR: “How many pages is the ceasefire? What deal points? How do we know that the ceasefire is active or... not active without any documentation?”
HEGSETH: “We know. It’s evident, and the ceasefire is in effect.”
AGUILAR: “But...you...is it pages...is it...15 points? There’s been different points that have moved around. Is there any other...How do we know?...You just trust that President knows whether the ceasefire is active or not active?”
HEGSETH: “As you know, for the most part, a ceasefire means the fire is ceasing, and we know that has occurred while negotiations occur.”
When I was a much younger, less patient, less tolerant man, my reply to Rep. Aguilar would have been "Duuuhhhh," but I'm much older and more deliberate these days.
Rep. Aguilar also didn't seem to understand that the objective with the current engagement with Iran is to keep them from ever developing a nuclear weapon, despite the fact that the president and every Cabinet member, directly, indirectly, or tangentially involved with this, have said so at every opportunity since the whole thing started.
Secretary Hegseth just put Democrat Rep. Pete Aguilar in his place, after Aguilar tried to accuse him of using ceasefires to EVADE the War Powers Act.

This post reads:

AGUILAR: “Is the theory to create more ceasefires or more projects, just to evade the War Powers Act?”
HEGSETH: “The ‘theory’ of the entire case is to prevent Iran from having a nuclear weapon, and if that has to be done kinetically and militarily, the Department of War is locked and loaded and ready to do that.”
“If it happens through Project Freedom, where you move commerce through, if it happens through a negotiated deal.”
“The president was very clear even yesterday, this is actually quite simple, Iran will never have a nuclear weapon one way or another.”
“And we’re here to support as one tool of the whole of government to make that happen.”
That's a pretty clear statement. But Rep. Aguilar isn't concerned about any of that, of course. If President Obama or President Biden had carried out this exact same plan, this exact same attack on the world's greatest state sponsor of Islamic terrorists, who is trying to build a nuclear weapon, Rep. Aguilar - bet on it - would have been all in favor.

Here's the thing: That cease-fire, that event where, you know, both sides aren't shooting at each other, well, it's been shaky from the get-go. Iran is still taking potshots. We're still smacking them when they take potshots. And President Trump is now saying that the negotiations are on live support.

"Right now after reading that piece of garbage they sent us. I didn't even finish reading it."
We should remember that when Secretary of War Hegseth isn't defenestrating dumb questions from Congressmen, he's overseeing a huge, complex operation to defang one of the most brutal, violent, and pitiless regimes on the planet. So far, Iran's military has been destroyed, its political and military leadership relentlessly hunted down, its old Supreme Leader's birth certificate has been permanently revoked, and his son, the new Supreme Leader, hasn't been seen since Day One of the fracas. Smart money is he's dead or completely incapacitated.
And, as we saw on Monday, what's left of the regime may well be looking to the exits.

Nothing is predictable in war. But right now, bleating complaints from Democrats aside, we have the Iranian regime set back on their heels. It's time to finish the job, and every member of Congress, Democrats and Republicans, should be able to see that for themselves. But Democrats are more concerned with this being a Trump administration effort than they are about it being a necessary act.
Principals, not principles.
Fortunately, we have in Pete Hegseth a War Department head who is as adept at dealing with Congress as he is at dealing with 7th-century barbarians.
Editor's Note: President Trump is leading America into the "Golden Age" as Democrats try desperately to stop it.
