President Trump has, since resuming office a little less than a year ago, made no bones about his desire to make Greenland a part of the United States. Greenland has a strategic location; like Alaska in the Pacific, Greenland stands as a monitor of the Atlantic's access to the Arctic, which is a region that will only become more and more strategically important. Long-range aircraft in Alaska and Greenland can not only dominate the Arctic, but also much of the Northern Hemisphere.
Greenland also has a great deal of oil and mineral wealth, as well. Now, we learn that there's a renewed resource in Greenland that will be drawing a lot more attention; turns out there's gold in them thar hills.
Amaroq Ltd. Dec. 4 announced results from its 2025 drilling program at the Nalunaq gold mine in southern Greenland, where underground resource conversion drilling returned new high-grade intercepts that derisk near-term production in the Mountain Block and surface step-out drilling confirmed that the Main Vein continues well beyond previously mined areas.
Located roughly 33 kilometers (20 miles) northeast of Nanortalik, Nalunaq is a past-producing operation that yielded about 350,000 ounces of gold between 2004 and 2009 before closing under previous ownership.
Since acquiring the 7,867-square-kilometer (3,037 square miles) property, Amaroq has transitioned the project from reevaluation into redevelopment, applying improved structural and geochemical models that have steadily increased geological confidence in the high-grade system.
This graphic from Amaroq gives a pretty good understanding of the scope of the proposed development.

It's as yet unknown how much more gold may be in this Nalunaq mine, but Amaroq notes that the drilling "derisks" near-term production, which reads like geology-speak for "there's enough gold in there to make resuming operations worthwhile."
This may well pique more interest on the part of the United States and the Trump administration. It also makes any such annexation less likely.

Less likely, you might ask, when Greenland just became even more valuable? Yes, less likely; here's why, and I'm going to tell you. Greenland is now an autonomous possession of Denmark, which would lead one to believe that the economic benefit of this new development will accrue primarily to Greenlanders. While the Trump administration's primary interest has been Greenland's strategic location, the president has, in the past, also discussed Greenland's mineral wealth; it seems unlikely the island's inhabitants would choose to join the United States and risk losing that increment.
And there may be even more gold than in the Main Vein and Mountain Block.
Drilling will continue through the winter, with underground work directed toward resource definition, conversion, and advancing development into deeper areas of the mine, while a westward drive is planned to test whether the Mountain Block mineral corridor extends farther in that direction. At the same time, expanded surface drilling will seek to delineate the newly confirmed structural continuity, generating the information needed for targeted resource drilling in 2026.
"Our 2025 exploration campaign included targets across the identified southern Greenland gold belt, which also contains the Nanoq project, on which we will be reporting results before the end of the year," said Gilbertson.
Mineral wealth, including gold, is good for Greenland. It also makes Greenland more independent. If I were advising President Trump and/or the War Department, I'd advise them to look into some basing deals for American ships and aircraft, because, frankly, I don't see Greenland being annexed to the USA any time soon.
