New: Smith Eyed McCarthy's Cell Data in 'Arctic Frost' Probe

The more we learn about this Arctic Frost probe - and as someone who lives in, well, the sub-Arctic, I take some personal exception to the name - the worse it looks. It was a fishing expedition on a grand scale, and there are new revelations almost daily about just how far former special counsel Jack Smith cast his net.

On Thursday, we learned that, in the course of this investigation, ostensibly into the events of January 6th, 2021, Smith even sought the private phone records of the Republican Speaker of the House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy. A Fox News exclusive story has the details.

Former special counsel Jack Smith allegedly sought the private, personal cellphone records of then-Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy as part of his investigation into the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riots, Fox News Digital has learned.
Smith also sought the private phone records of now-former Republican Rep. Louie Gohmert of Texas.
Fox News Digital exclusively reviewed the document that FBI Director Kash Patel recently shared with Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley and Sen. Ron Johnson containing the explosive revelations. Grassley and Johnson have been leading a joint investigation into Smith’s "Arctic Frost" probe.

It's hard to fathom any conceivable reason Smith would have for seeking these records, unless you operate on the assumption that Smith was on a fishing expedition; in light of that, of course, it all makes sense.

Here's the onion:

According to the document, Smith, on Jan. 24, 2023, allegedly sought the "toll records for the personal cell phones of U.S. Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy (AT&T) and U.S. Representative Louie Gohmert (Verizon.)"
The information was included as part of a "Significant Case Notification" drafted by the FBI’s Criminal Investigative Division on May 25, 2023.
"Jack Smith's radical and deranged investigation was never about finding the truth," former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy told Fox News Digital. "It was a blatant weaponizing of the Justice Department to attack political opponents of the Biden administration. Perhaps no action underscores this point more than the illegal attempt to access the phone records of sitting members of the House and Senate — including the Speaker of the House."

This wasn't an investigation. It was a witch-hunt of the worst sort.

Smith, of course, insists everything was on the up and up.

"As described by various Senators, the toll data collection was narrowly tailored and limited to the four days from January 4, 2021 to January 7, 2021, with a focus on telephonic activity during the period immediately surrounding the January 6 riots at the U.S. Capitol," Smith’s lawyers wrote in October to Grassley.

Unvarnished bull-Schiff.

Politics has always been a dirty business, and if you don't believe that, just read any of Cicero's "Philippics" speeches about Mark Antony. Cicero and Antony really, really, really hated each other, and when Antony came to power, he had Cicero's head and hands nailed to the Senate rostrum. We're a little more civilized than that today, at least, we are at the moment. But the 2016 election of Donald Trump as president seems to have broken something in the Democratic Party and the Washington establishment (but I repeat myself.) We've seen derangement of various sorts before, of course. When George W. Bush was president, I remember the mention of "Bush Derangement Syndrome," and to be fair, there were accusations of "Obama Derangement Syndrome" as well. But Trump Derangement Syndrome seems to have topped them all - or "Trumped' them all, if you like.

If I had to guess, I'd guess Jack Smith won't face any consequences for his partisan witch-hunt. But Donald Trump is back in the White House, and that may be a greater punishment for the Washington establishment than anything else we could devise.
