The United States federal government has been partially shut down for 40 days now. This thing has blown past all previous records. The Senate is deadlocked, unable to push the original continuing resolution, or CR, through to passage. What's more, the original CR is getting past its best-by date. The shutdown is starting to affect air travel and air cargo, among other things, and the Thanksgiving travel season is only a couple of weeks away.
Democrats are holding this up in large part over COVID-era subsidies for the Obamacare program, which were slated to expire in any case at the end of 2025, years after the COVID mess ended. The Senate has voted no fewer than 14 times on the CR, and Democrats refuse to budge.
People are growing impatient, not least of which is President Donald Trump. The president is never one to suffer in silence - nor does he suffer fools lightly. On Sunday, he took to his Truth Social account to let everyone know exactly what he thinks of all this. On Saturday, I reported on his idea of paying the citizenry directly, to allow them to shop for and purchase the coverage of their choice; and my colleague Katie Jerkovich let us know that the president isn't the only one who's getting impatient:

‘Stupid Should Hurt More’: Sen. Kennedy’s Savage Response to Schumer Over Latest Shutdown Proposal
Over the weekend, though, the president was letting the Democrats and the insurance companies have a good piece of his mind, and that's for sure and for certain.
First, on Saturday, he launched a second, all-caps broadside at the insurance companies:

The president writes:
NO MORE MONEY, HUNDREDS OF BILLIONS OF DOLLARS, TO THE DEMOCRAT SUPPORTED INSURANCE COMPANIES FOR REALLY BAD OBAMACARE. THE MONEY MUST NOW GO DIRECTLY TO THE PEOPLE, TAKING THE “FAT CAT” INSURANCE COMPANIES OUT OF THE CORRUPT SYSTEM OF HEALTHCARE. THE PEOPLE CAN BUY THEIR OWN, MUCH BETTER POLICY, FOR MUCH LESS MONEY, SAVING, FOR THEMSELVES, AN ABSOLUTE FORTUNE!!! PRESIDENT DJT
We might note that the consumers would be buying their own policies, well, from the insurance companies. But this is still an idea with some merit. The government would still be involved, there would be the usual bureaucratic siphon taking a rake-off of the tax dollars collected before they are doled back out. Better to get the government, at least at the federal level, out of the equation altogether. But politics is the art of the possible, and this wouldn't be the worst first step.

The president continues:
I am sorry that the American People are being terrorized by Democrats who have decided to shut the Government down to make me and other Republicans continue ObamaCare subsidies, which have been a windfall for Health Insurance Companies, and a DISASTER for the American People. The largest Health Insurance Companies have seen their Stock Prices soar (Some over 1000%!) since the passage of ObamaCare. Meanwhile, Americans’ Premiums have more than DOUBLED, contrary to President Obama’s promise. I believe that the money should go directly to THE PEOPLE to purchase better Healthcare, and create competition. This enrichment of Health Insurance companies must stop. It is long past time to lower Premiums, not enrich Insurance Companies. I stand ready to work with both Parties to solve this problem once the Government is open. Stop terrorizing the American People. Stop pushing failed policies!
The health insurance companies, yes, have seen their stock prices soar, and we might also notice certain members of Congress whose success in playing the stock market is nothing short of astonishing - that is, until you remember that members of Congress have a lot to say about healthcare policy, and are privy to information that the rest of us are not.
The president also launched another broadside at those who oppose his trade policy via the use of tariffs in deal-making:

And, again, the president writes:
People that are against Tariffs are FOOLS! We are now the Richest, Most Respected Country In the World, With Almost No Inflation, and A Record Stock Market Price. 401k’s are Highest EVER. We are taking in Trillions of Dollars and will soon begin paying down our ENORMOUS DEBT, $37 Trillion. Record Investment in the USA, plants and factories going up all over the place. A dividend of at least $2000 a person (not including high income people!) will be paid to everyone
Now, here I'm going to differ with President Trump. Keep the dividend. Apply it to our staggering national debt. But $2K in the pockets of every American citizen? Minus whatever will be decided is "high income" people, of course. The temptation to buy votes is always there.
There is a model here, though: Alaska's Permanent Fund, from which every resident is paid a stipend every year. But Alaska isn't $38 trillion in debt. This is a sword of Damocles hanging over the country, and nobody seems to be talking too much about dealing with it.
President Trump isn't staying quiet this weekend. It's generally interesting reading his social media comments. They are raw, unfiltered, with flashes of anger and humor both. It's a level of open communication that we haven't seen from a president before, and when it comes to taking his message directly to people, well, social media has made it possible, but Donald Trump showed us how it's done.
