Anyone who 1) is anywhere to the political right of Leon Trotsky and 2) hasn't been living under a flat rock somewhere in the Kunlun Mountains for the last few decades knows what a leftist mess most of our country's universities have become. Conservative students are frozen out, denied club applications, denied their free-speech rights, and in some cases, are threatened physically.

Some of these young people are pushing back now. The Young America’s Foundation (YAF), an organization of young conservatives, has asked AAG Harmeet Dhillon's office to initiate a Title VI and Title IX investigation against North Carolina's Davidson College. The YAF's statement on the matter says in part:

Young America’s Foundation has formally lodged a civil rights complaint against administrators at North Carolina’s Davidson College for actions taken against YAF student activists Cynthia Huang and Hannah Fay.

Specifically, YAF’s complaint — filed with the U.S. Department of Justice’s Division of Civil Rights and the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights — calls out Davidson College for violating Title VI, Title IX, and administrative directives from President Donald Trump.

Despite being a private institution, Davidson College falls under the jurisdiction of federal civil rights watchdogs because the school, as YAF’s complaint notes, receives federal funds. In 2023 and 2024, Davidson College received more than $6.7 million from taxpayers in the form of federal grants and contracts. Federal law directs the government to hold such recipients of taxpayer funds accountable for running afoul of the law and administrative directives.

As the complaint explains, YAF’s students faced discrimination, harassment, and censorship for expressing support for Israel in the wake of the October 7, 2023, Hamas terrorist attack as well as for their stated belief in biological reality regarding men, women, and the inability to change one’s sex.

Here are the specifics:

Among the administrators’ actions outlined in YAF’s complaint, Davidson College officials:

  • Allowed aggressive anti-Israel demonstrations to permeate campus and allowed the distribution of pamphlets titled “International Intifada: An urgent call to participate in the colonizer’s execution,” but banned YAF students from making available a YAF publication authored by Robert Spencer titled “The Five Myths About Israel Perpetrated by the Pro-Hamas Left.”
  • Harassed, intimidated, and threatened YAF students for making the literature by Robert Spencer available, including threatening disciplinary action for providing a counterpoint to the rabid anti-Israel and pro-Hamas Left’s activism on campus
  • Used leftist students’ claims of feeling “unsafe” due to expressive activity in support of Israel to intimidate YAF students while willfully ignoring leftist displays, activism, and destruction of property, thereby engaging in clearly disparate treatment based on the viewpoints being expressed
  • Suppressed expression of the idea that sex is a biological fact and binary, while threatening additional disciplinary action over YAF students’ stated belief that people cannot change their sex because, supposedly, such expression made leftist students feel “threatened and unsafe”

YAF's communications chief, Spencer Brown, has a very detailed thread on X detailing the complaint.

That's a lot to absorb, granted. And Davidson is far from the only "academic" institution indulging in this kind of discrimination.

The prompt and fitting response from the Trump administration would simply be this: Yank that $6.7 million in federal funding. Ideally, permanently. The federal government has no business, and no constitutional authority, to be involved in education anyway, much less in using taxpayer money to support leftist ideologies. All of this government money has been pouring into academia for decades now. It's been making a university education more expensive. It's paid for an explosion of administrators over educators. And worst of all, the influx of taxpayer cash has relieved universities of any worries that they are failing in their primary goal: To produce young adults with marketable skills.

It is precisely due to this that the proliferation of "Underwater Ethnic Dog-Polishing Studies" degrees has been allowed to flourish.

Our entire education system needs an enema, and the university system seems the ideal place to stick the syringe. Let this investigation go forward. Let Davidson lose their federal funding. Many of us who understand the Constitution would just as soon see the federal government divest itself completely of any involvement in education, but while it is involved, and while we have an administration that is willing to act, we may as well use the system as it is to hold these leftist institutions to account. And, in the process, restore the freedom of speech to our conservative students.
