Haven't we had enough of these "green" boondoggles yet?
This nitwittery hasn't gone away yet, and that's a problem. "Green" energy boondoggles are like socialism; they fail every time they are tried. In the case of electric buses and so forth, it's not just the laws of economics that get in the way, but also the laws of physics. Electrical generation by solar panels and windmills is not compatible with increasing demand by a wholesale switch to electric buses and trains. But that apparently hasn't stopped Democrat politicians, mostly from California, from demanding big subsidies for this nonsense from Congress - and they may well be getting them, too.
Nearly $16 million taxpayer dollars are set aside for zero-emission buses and charging stations across the country in one of Congress’ proposed annual government funding bills.
The House’s proposed Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act for fiscal year 2026 is just one of the 12 annual appropriations bills providing money for federal agencies.
With a total price tag of $89.9 billion, the proposed legislation includes more than a dozen earmarks totaling at least $15.8 billion for electric buses, hydrogen buses, and electric bus charging stations or battery systems across only four states. The number is likely higher, due to the ambiguity of some lawmakers’ transportation-related budget requests.
Why? Why is the Republican-controlled House of Representatives allowing this horse squeeze to continue to be shoehorned into the budget? Oh, I get that politics is the art of the possible, and sometimes it's required to make concessions to make a deal. But look who's proposing these boondoggles:
California would receive the lion’s share of the money, requested for multiple projects by Democratic U.S. Reps. Pete Aguilar, Judy Chu, Linda Sanchez, Mark DeSaulnier, Jimmy Gomez, Sydney Kamlager-Dove, Ted Lieu, Maxine Waters, Nanette Barragan, and Amy Bera.
And it's not just California:
Ohio, Massachusetts, and Washington would also receive funds. In Ohio, Toledo Area Regional Transit Authority would collect $2.45 million to transition to zero emissions buses, plus build a new garage.
Steamship Authority Shuttle in Massachusetts would receive $2 million to replace its gas-powered buses with electric, while Community Transit in Washington would get $2 million to purchase battery electric buses.
Enough is too much, already. This is a calamitous waste of money. If these states, cities, and authorities want to engage in these wasteful piles of corral litter, let them raise funds or go to their state and city governments with their hands out. The federal government should have nothing to do with it. The Constitution does not permit it, and frankly, we taxpayers should be righteously outraged at it.

Granted, $16 million isn't all that much of a much, some may say, when the monstrous amounts our federal government spends. But there is, or there should be, a matter of principle involved. Wasteful is wasteful, and wasting the taxpayer's money is something that is wrong in essence; it's a breach of trust between elected officials and the people they represent. It doesn't matter if it's $16 million or 16 cents; there's no way this expenditure can or should be justified.
Had I President Trump's ear - sadly, I don't - I would urge him to use the bully pulpit to agitate against this waste, and if necessary, to veto any budget bill with any green subsidies in it. Enough is enough. We didn't vote for this.
