Later this week is the great American holiday, Independence Day, and we’ll be taking some video at a great local Independence Day parade, so watch for that next week. In the meantime:
This is interesting. We were actually in Homer when this happened, although we didn’t hear about it; nevertheless, a happy ending for a moose calf and its mother.
It was a seemingly normal day for Homer Parks Maintenance Coordinator Chad Felice until he was flagged down by a regular at the park on June 19.
“I was just kind of doing my morning rounds, going and checking all the parks,” Felice said. “He flagged me down and said that a mother moose with another calf kind of charged him.”
He explained to Felice that he thought there was another calf nearby because of the way the moose was acting.
“The mama moose and the other baby was off into the forest a little bit so we could see that the other baby was stuck underneath the boardwalk,” Felice explained.
The stuck baby was soon rescued:
The person with the wetsuit “crawled actually underneath the boardwalk,” Felice said. “Another wildlife worker came and took the grates off, and there was wildlife worker on the watch for mom,” Felice said.
After a few more bluff charges by the defensive mama moose, the team was able to lift the calf out and safely return it to mom.
“Once we got it up from underneath the boardwalk and got it over the other little gap, obviously it was making some noise, but then once it kind of saw mom, it just kind of trotted over to mom, and mom gave it a lick and little grunt,” Felice explained.
With mom and baby safely reunited, the family of three walked deeper into the woods. Felice said he expects to see them in the area again.
There was a fair amount of good luck involved here, not the least of which is that Mama Moose didn’t get more aggressive. They are known to do that when something is messing around with their babies. But, this time it was a case of “all’s well that ends well.”
Alaska Man score: 5 moose nuggets. I love a happy ending.
It wouldn’t be a summer weekend without a dumb crook – and what is it with walking in the middle of the road?
On 06/28/2025 at 0705 hours Troopers responded to 18-mile Steese Highway in regard to a male walking in the middle of the roadway. This was the second call for service that night where Troopers responded to this male walking in the lane of traffic on a roadway. The male was not cooperative, refused to ID himself, and ultimately fought with Troopers. Jarrod Charge was arrested for disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.
This dumb crook, like all those who seem to find walking down the middle of the road appropriate, seems to have a big dose of arrogance to go along with his stupidity.
Alaska Man score: 0.5 moose nuggets. He gets half a point for serving as a “what not to do” lesson.
And, finally, a great rescue, happy to see everyone is OK – but I have to say, I love the name of the vessel involved:
On June 28, 2025, at 2:54pm, the Alaska Wildlife Troopers received a report of an overturned or swamped fishing vessel “Happy Hooker” in the shallows off the beach in the Ugashik Fishing District, outside King Salmon, near Pilot Point, with three commercial fishermen in survival suits, stuck on the listing boat. The P/V Audrey Ann was in the district due to the ongoing commercial fishery and responded. Troopers were able to rescue all three under very challenging wind and surf conditions, from the Audrey Ann’s skiff. All three survivors declined medical attention.
Alaska’s environment can be dangerous. That’s what the urban “environmentalist” shouters never seem to get, namely, that the environment can change gears on you very quickly, with life-threatening results. In this case, fortunately, everything ended up OK.
No score on this one. It’s good enough that everyone’s OK.
Finally, let’s talk about New York, New Yorkers, and their problems – with a sweet footnote.
