Conspiracy theories all too often have one problem in common: one distinguishing characteristic that defines them.
They're utter horse squeeze.
One such theory is the "chemtrails" theory. If this were a real thing, then (as you can see in the photo above) apparently, the U.S. Army Air Forces were carrying out chemtrail operations against Germany in 1944, and amazingly, they found a way to unload these chemical agents through the tips of the propellers on the famous Boeing bomber's massive radial piston engines as well as through the engines' exhaust.
When hot air meets cool, damp air, you get condensation. In effect, clouds. That's what contrails are - the perfectly normal by-products of high-altitude aviation. That's what they have always been. That's what they always will be.
Watts Up With That's Anthony Watts has produced a comprehensive debunking of this hooraw.
The chemtrail conspiracy theory alleges that aircraft contrails are chemical agents deliberately sprayed for sinister purposes. This theory is unsupported by scientific evidence and contradicts well-established atmospheric science, logistical realities, and environmental data. Below is a concise rebuttal addressing key misconceptions, with additional references to strengthen the argument.
- Contrails are water vapor, not chemicals: Contrails form when water vapor from aircraft engine exhaust immediately condenses and freezes into ice crystals at high altitudes (above 25,000 feet), where temperatures are below -40°C. See the graphic below. These crystals create visible trails that persist based on humidity and temperature, as detailed in Shearer et al. (2016). Studies like Schumann (2005) further confirm contrails are primarily water-based, with trace emissions (e.g., soot, sulfur) insufficient to suggest deliberate chemical dispersal.
Mr. Watts correctly describes the physical phenomenon here; these long white trails of high-altitude aircraft are, essentially, clouds. They are high-altitude ice clouds, but still clouds, water vapor condensed into ice crystals.
Here's my primary problem with theories like this: Consider how many people would have to be involved in a nefarious scheme like this. Every airline would have to be involved. Every major national government would have to be involved. The pilots, the maintenance people, we're talking hundreds of thousands of people. And when you consider that these contrails-not chemtrails, contrails-have been observed since before World War 2, you're talking generations of people mysteriously maintaining their silence.
And in all the years that the airlines and the military arms of all these nations have supposedly been involved in all this, not one person has come forward as a whistleblower? Not one person has had an attack of conscience? Not one person has smuggled out a photograph of the tanks of chemicals being loaded into an airliner or a military jet? Not one person has shown the spraying mechanism or the tanks of chemical agents in the airplanes themselves? Not one person from whatever facility is manufacturing the chem-trail agents has squealed?
I'm not buying it; not by a long shot. Not when these atmospheric phenomena are much more easily explainable by well-known physical processes that have been observed for 80 years or more. Occam's Razor applies here. The simplest explanation is usually the best one, and in this case, it's simple: Introduce heated water vapor into cold, high-altitude air, and that water vapor condenses and forms ice crystals.
Contrails. Not chemtrails.

So, no, these are not and never have been "chemtrails." This theory is about as logical as flat-earth theory, and has the same amount of evidentiary support - none.
