Trump Admin EPA to Eliminate All Animal Testing

The White Coat Waste Project is a Washington watchdog group whose primary agenda is to identify and stop wasteful and unnecessary animal testing and experimentation by the federal government or federal contractors. That's a laudable goal; there are some things for which animal testing is still necessary - more on that later - but the things that WCW is identifying don't fit that mold.

In their latest coup, the group has been instrumental in reviving a Trump 45-era policy to end animal testing by the Environmental Protection Agency, and when you look at some of the testing that was being done, you can see why.

- Following White Coat Waste (WCW) investigations and advocacy, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is resurrecting its historic Trump-era plan to eliminate animal testing.
- In 2023, WCW exposed that the Biden EPA quietly canceled Trump’s plan to phase out testing on dogs and other mammals by 2035 and retire rabbits from its labs.
- Now, Trump’s EPA states, “Administrator Zeldin is wholly committed to getting the agency back on track to eliminating animal testing”.
- WCW uncovered how the Biden EPA wasted tax dollars on animal tests for “environmental justice” and forced animals to inhale simulated wildfire smoke and emissions from rifles and handguns. It also killed rabbits that WCW offered to re-home.
- WCW has been urging the Trump Administration to reinstate the EPA animal testing phaseout plan.

Last month, a White Coat Waste Project (WCW) investigation uncovered how President Joe Biden’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reversed the agency’s historic and widely-supported plans to phase out all testing on dogs and all other mammals by 2035 and retire rabbits from its labs.
WCW previously documented how the EPA abused 20,000 animals annually for wasteful in-house tests funded by taxpayers, like making animals inhale diesel exhaust, and rallied bipartisan Congressional support to stop it.
The EPA was supposed to end all of this, but we’ve exposed how its ongoing wasteful and cruel animal tests include forcing mice to inhale smoke from handguns and rifles, and locking rats in hot cages, feeding them high-fat diets, and pumping the cages full of simulated wildfire smoke to allegedly study the physical and mental health effects of global warming and wildfires on people who eat unhealthy diets.

I think it's safe to say we already knew that inhaling wildfire smoke and diesel exhaust is bad for you.

Look, when a nation is nearing $37 trillion in debt, which we are, there are some things we can't afford, and this kind of horse squeeze is in that category - not to mention that these tests are making animals suffer for no really good reason. We already know that it's bad to breathe in fumes from recently discharged firearms (although sometimes we just can't help ourselves), and a nation that is in debt up to its eyeballs doesn't need to be spending money to quantify that effect down to three significant figures.

There are some instances in which animal testing is difficult or impossible to replace, such as in the development of new pharmaceuticals and treatments. From a biological standpoint, it's difficult to assess any possible systemic effect a chemical compound or treatment might have unless you test it in a biological system - an animal - as any other model we could devise is laughably crude compared to a living, breathing animal. But the work the EPA was doing here isn't necessary, it isn't needed, it's inflicting suffering on these animals for no good reason - and we can't afford it. Kudos to WCW for getting this shut down.
