Kamala Harris to Visit Minnesota Planned Parenthood Clinic - Why?

Vice President Kamala Harris, during a trip to Minnesota — a state that reliably votes Democrat — will be visiting a Planned Parenthood clinic, an organization supported lockstep by Democrats, in a rather transparent attempt to appeal to a constituency that reliably votes Democrat. The visit is scheduled to take place on Thursday and is being ballyhooed as the first visit to a Planned Parenthood clinic by a sitting Vice President.

Vice President Kamala Harris will go to a Planned Parenthood clinic in Minnesota on Thursday, a White House official tells CNN, the first time a sitting US president or vice president is believed to visit an abortion provider.

The visit will help serve Harris’ efforts to highlight an issue the campaign believes will galvanize moderate voters in November.

The vice president is traveling to Minnesota on the sixth stop of her “Fight for Reproductive Freedoms” tour, and she is expected to walk through the Planned Parenthood facility and speak with staff about reproductive rights, another White House official says.

Harris began the tour in January in Wisconsin, and she has since held events in California, Georgia, Michigan and Arizona.

This begs the question, "And therefore, what?"

Leaving aside the "first visit to a Planned Parenthood clinic by a Vice President" silliness for a moment, this seems like a poor use of the Vice President's time for a couple of reasons:

  • This trip the VP is on is, transparently, a campaign trip, and Minnesota is a state that reliably votes Democrat; campaigning on safe turf this early in the game seems like a waste of time and effort.
  • A Planned Parenthood clinic, its staffers, and its patients are overwhelmingly a Democrat constituency; again, this seems like a waste of time and effort.
  • While abortion is the third rail of Democrat politics, and while the VP, like most Democrats, is still screeching like a cat with its hair being pulled out over the Supreme Court's Dobbs decision that they invariably misunderstand, again, this is safe ground.

So why is the Vice President bothering to stop in here and deliver the inevitable word salad?

There's one obvious reason: because it's safe ground. In all candor, the Vice President isn't fit to deliver any remarks anywhere but on safe ground. She's not smart enough to respond to tough questions, she has all of the political acumen of a rutabaga, and her attempts at discourse make about as much sense as a plate of beans trying to negotiate their way out of someone's colon.

Here's the reason given for this visit:

The campaign is focused on making abortion a centerpiece of its messaging as it seeks to court moderate voters – particularly women.

About half of registered voters in the United States say this year’s elections will have a “major impact” on access to abortion, and about 1 in 8 voters says that abortion is the most important issue driving their vote, according to a new KFF survey.

There are a couple of things the Biden/Harris people might be missing: First, yes, about half of voters may say that this year's elections will have a major impact on access to abortion — a significant number of those people are in favor of some limits on access to abortion, and those people won't be voting Democrat. Second, that "1 in 8" number should be concerning, given that the economy and illegal immigration are likely the issues on which the election will turn — and those issues don't favor the Biden administration.

This visit, and indeed this entire tour of the country, is pure political pandering of the first order. That's probably for the best, from the point of view of the campaign; pandering is one of the few things Vice President Harris can be relied on to do.
