Michigan Democrat Blows Whistle on Her Party’s Convention Trainwreck

Occasionally, you have to take a moment and evaluate things to see if what you think you know is actually the truth or maybe could be. Thankfully, watching the GOP in my home state of Michigan has taught me how to do this, and Lord knows I have had to, at times, do it a lot with them.

So, when on the extremely rare occasion, I come across a Democrat who is making sense on how the Democrat Party has badly run something, I won't lie, it's shocking.

Really shocking.

The Michigan Republicans held their Statewide convention at the end of March to nominate candidates for Michigan Attorney General and Secretary of State, who would be officially nominated (voted on statewide) in August of this year. The Democrats held their statewide convention almost three weeks later to do the same thing, and, for once, they seemingly did not play nice with each other.

I am literally shocked by some of the allegations and by what is being done about them, and also, that it is being discussed publicly.

From the ever-present Detroit News and its reporters...

Karen McDonald, Oakland County's prosecutor who wanted to be the Democratic nominee for attorney general, says her team has uncovered "widespread irregularities affecting at least hundreds of voters" at the party's April 19 convention.

McDonald lost the attorney general race at the gathering to Washtenaw County Prosecutor Eli Savit. But in recent days, she says, she's found party members whose votes were recorded incorrectly and people who voted but their votes weren't recorded at all. Meanwhile, McDonald contends more than 200 votes were cast from individuals who weren't in Detroit, despite the fact that voters were supposed to be in person at the convention in Detroit to participate.

Oh my.

Oddly enough, I had to scratch my head when I read the results a day or so after the Democrats' con fab, which I covered here at RedState.

I observed this lil nugget...

The Democrats' decision to pick Eli over Karen was actually a gift to the GOP.

Races for attorney general are usually as interesting as watching snow melt in April, but the Democrats' pick, I think, was actually a gift not only to the GOP, but to the state in general. Savit, who is progressive and does not run from the term, is currently the county prosecutor in Washtenaw, which is just a tad bit west of Detroit and Wayne County. One of the first things that Eli did when he assumed the office of county prosecutor was to eliminate cash bail, which made his county the first in Michigan to do that.

Aside from the Democrats' zeal to eliminate cash bail for anyone being investigated while held for something against the law, the support of someone who was relatively unknown was utterly surprising to me, and the lack of support for someone much better known stumped me.

McDonald had successfully led the prosecution against James and Jennifer Crumbley, whose son Ethan had killed four of his classmates at his high school in November of 2021. McDonald was widely praised by the left-of-center crowd for this, and yet she was denied a crack at running for Attorney General, which, as I said above, was a bit shocking to me.

So why did the Michigan Democrats turn on the Oakland County Prosecutor?

Great question.

Yet Karen does not really want to continue this fight, but she does in a way???

In the message, the Oakland County prosecutor said she chose not to officially contest the convention result because she is "not committed to participating in a 'do-over.'"

"There was behavior at the endorsement convention that was reprehensible and antisemitic," McDonald said. "Absent an audit, a plan for a secure and accurate election process and a commitment by party leadership to create an environment where everyone can feel safe and be heard, there is no reason to expect a different result in August. "I would not put my family, my supporters or my staff through that again. The fact that I did not appeal is not a reason to ignore these issues."

Excuse me....what?

I am totally confused.

The Oakland County prosecutor (who is a Democrat) believes there was election fraud at the Democratic statewide convention, but she wants to take a pass on it? If there were fraud anywhere in the county where you serve as an elected prosecutor, I would think you would want to pursue it.

Here is the killer part of the paragraph above.

"I would not put my family, my supporters or my staff through that again. The fact that I did not appeal is not a reason to ignore these issues."

So you don't want to put your family and supporters through the fight against fraud that (possibly) sank your campaign, and you will not fight it, but please don't ignore the issue like me?

What?

Oh, and there was antisemitic behavior on display also?

Yikes.

When the current term-limited attorney general of Michigan, Democrat  Dana Nessel, announced she was joining a call for an audit of the results of the Michigan Democrats meeting back in April, I blew right past that story

I was wrong for that, and once again, Michigan politics shocks me, although it shouldn't

Maybe the GOP can win both the Attorney General's and the Secretary of State's posts in 2026. Maybe.

Only time will tell.
