Donald Trump, the 47th president of the United States, just captured a political scalp, but this time, it was not of those who disagree with him in his own country but the leader of another country.

Of course, I'm talking about our northern neighbor of Canada, and it was in the form of now former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

My colleague Bob Hoge had the story yesterday right after new Prime Minister Mark Carney had been chosen to lead the ruling liberal party until the next country-wide vote, which must occur before the end of this year.

BREAKING: Canada Has a New Prime Minister As Trudeau's Rule Comes to an End

Canada has voted for Former Central Bank Governor of Canada and Trump critic Mark Carney to be the next prime minister as he overwhelmingly won the vote to become the Liberal Party’s next leader. Current PM Justin Trudeau announced his resignation in early January. The extremely woke Trudeau has faced all sorts of controversies during his tenure and most recently has been the target of U.S. President Donald Trump, who is imposing tariffs on our neighbor to the north and laughing that it would make a great 51st state.

Carney took a defiant tone as he celebrated his victory:

Carney told cheering supporters that "Canada will never become part of America in any way, shape or form."

Carney received 86% of the vote, or 131,764 votes of the 151,899 ones cast from the nearly 400,000 party members who registered to participate in the leadership election.

The new Liberal leader told members that they should be prepared to fight "the most important election of our lives" where the "stakes have never been higher."

He said, Canada is the "greatest country in the world and now our neighbors want to take us. No way," said the incoming Canadian prime minister referring to President Donald Trump’s repeated desire for the U.S. to annex Canada as the "51st state."

Carney, who is a central banker-turned-centrist (leftist) politician, has taken the top spot in the country and replaced "Governor Trudeau" as the leader of the Great White North (and birthplace of hockey). You can see above in Carney's statement that he is picking up where Trudeau left off and attempting to antagonize Trump about tariffs.

While the election could happen as late as this fall, so far, the lead that the conservatives have, while not large, would be just enough to take over the government and replace the liberal leadership party as it stands today with Pierre Poilievre, who is the leader of the opposition party.

A poll taken last week (while Trudeau was still in charge) had conservatives at 171 seats in Parliament (172 are needed to take over) and 121 for the main liberal party. However, in a parliamentary system, more than one party can gain seats, and if you take a look at the polling chart HERE you can see that the parties gaining seats are mostly to the left of the party of Trudeau.

Think of Bernie Sanders with less charm,

Speaking of no charm, Ontario is the province that borders the great state of Michigan, where I reside, and where the premier of said province has decided that no matter what is happening in Ottawa with the national stuff, he is taking it upon himself to take on Donald Trump.

Good luck with that.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford has decided the course of action he will pursue against the Trump Administration and Americans, in general, is to put a surcharge on electricity that is produced in his province and sent over to the United States of America. I read about this right HERE:

President Donald Trump may have delayed most – though not all – of the tariffs he had imposed on Canada and Mexico, but that hasn’t stopped America’s northern neighbors from responding forcefully in retaliation.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford at a press conference that he would move forward with a 25% surcharge on electricity exports to three US states starting Monday, warning that he will would turn off access if the United States adds new tariffs on Canadian goods.

“If the United States escalates, I will not hesitate to shut the electricity off completely,” Ford told reporters. “Believe me when I say I do not want to do this, I feel terrible for the American people, because it’s not the American people who started this trade war. It’s one person who’s responsible. That’s President Trump.”

Ford on Monday said the 25% surcharge “will cost families and businesses” in New York, Minnesota and Michigan and add around “$100 per month to the bills of hardworking Americans.”

When I originally heard about this plan on my show last week, I Googled to see how much, if any, of the electricity we get is from Windsor. The answer was not CLEAR.

Michigan does get a substantial amount of electricity from Ontario, but the state does not consume most of it, said Dan Scripps, chair of the Michigan Public Service Commission and a former state representative.

Instead, that power flows through Michigan and into several other states before returning to Canada as part of the Eastern Interconnection. That’s an electrical grid that reaches central Canada and states east of the Rocky Mountains.

I'm going to assume that here in Michigan, we will be safe from a 25 percent surcharge in a retaliatory increase by Mr. Ford and his cronies.

However, this does reinforce Trump's main point about producing things here in America. Whether it's car parts, wicker furniture, or electricity, we do need to do more here on American soil so we cannot be held hostage economically.

On that point, all Americans should be in full agreement.
