Gretchen Whitmer Targets Trump Choice for Governor Before Tuesday's Primary

You truly do have to give it to Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and the Democrats in the state. They are absolutely wasting no time in doing a hatchet job on who they perceive to be the threat to them for the November election. Maybe the Republicans in the state can copy a page or two out of this book and do it better. That of course could only happen after we see pigs fly and the Detroit Tigers compete for a World Seris title this year.

Oh well.

As we wind down to the Michigan primary this Tuesday, August 2nd, I have been pontificating about the jockeying to win the GOP nomination and who will face-off against Whitmer this fall. What had been a pretty docile race until about 2 weeks ago has finally heated up over the past week with the endorsement of Tudor Dixon by former President Trump.

Here are some of my previous musings below.

Is Michigan GOP Gubernatorial Candidate Kevin Rinke a Secret Fan of Gov Whitmer?

BREAKING: Former Pres. Donald Trump Endorses Tudor Dixon for Michigan Governor

The Reaction to Donald Trump’s Endorsement for Governor in Michigan Is Truly Confusing

From my article above about some of the weird overreactions to Trump’s endorsement.

Some of the responses he received were, shall we say, interesting.

Oh my god are you a [expletive] idiot. She is establishment [expletive] rhino and its finest what in the hell are you thinking I’m voice texting and I know that rhino is not spelled like that when it comes to politics but then what in the hell R U thinking

Then there was this gem…

Dixon is an actress. She is all show and no go. She is witless the second. Devo’s bought and puppet.

These are just some of the more rational responses that were posted about Trump’s endorsement and as you can see, that is not saying much. Truly has been eye-opening watching the meltdown of those who claim to understand how things work in politics show they have no idea how things work in politics.

Case in point.

Seems that Donald Trump’s endorsement of Dixon comes just days after Democrats started teeing off on her in possible preparation for her winning the nomination. The rational mind would stop and wonder why in the hell would the Democrats be running ads against someone who is not yet won the nod to face off against Gretch.

Yet as I pointed out in my previous post, we are not dealing with rational thought in some cases here.

From Bridge Michigan, Democrats slam Tudor Dixon in attack ad, days before Michigan governor primary

Democrats are targeting Michigan Republican gubernatorial candidate Tudor Dixon with a new attack ad in the final days before Tuesday’s GOP primary.

Put Michigan First, a group backed by the Democratic Governors Association, is spending $2 million on a statewide television ad campaign suggesting a Dixon tax cut proposal could force widespread police officer layoffs.

Dixon’s proposal to “phase out” Michigan’s personal income tax, which generates $12 billion a year in revenue for state and local governments, could “slash” funding for police across the state, “threatening funding for thousands of law enforcement jobs,” a narrator says as a graphic warns of police layoffs.

The real irony of this argument that the DGA put together is that the Democrats are the party of Defund The Police. Yet this is a wonderful way to try and cover that up and project your political sins on others.

The larger point, however, is why the Dems decided to hit Dixon up with this ad before Trump made his endorsement announcement. If you are a curious fella like me, you might be asking yourself what the internals of their polling are showing with a Whitmer-Dixon match-up.

You could speculate that it is a wise move to hit the person leading in the GOP contest before the Tuesday primary. Yet why not hit the whole group running? They chose to focus on Dixon who is not the only one calling for the income tax reduction in Michigan and are trying to smear her with the reducing police funding malarkey.

Dixon hit back, from that article above…

Dixon called the ad “complete baloney” and “absolute bull” on Wednesday morning in a round-table discussion in metro Detroit’s Redford Township with leaders of the Police Officers Association of Michigan, a statewide union group that has endorsed her in the GOP primary.

“I would never do that,” Dixon said, referring to the claim that she would cut police funding if elected.

She said the ad is proof that Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is “scared of going up against me” in the general election.

Whitmer is probably scared of going up against her, which is actually a poignant political observation coming from someone who has been accused of just being an “actress” and a “puppet.” This is also pretty sound reasoning of how campaigns operate and work. You try to take out your opponent before they get any momentum and you do it quickly.

So while I’m not privy to all the reasons why Donald Trump decided to endorse Dixon, I would like to think part of it has to do with endorsing a candidate who can actually beat the incumbent. If the Democrats in Washington D.C. trying to protect Whitmer know who has a good chance of knocking her out of the Governor’s mansion, maybe Trump knew it also.

That is not to say that one of the other candidates running could not run a strong campaign against the “Queen of Lockdowns” but the DGA ad is the clearest indication of who the people backing Whitmer are worried about.

Hopefully, those people who claim to be grassroots in this state will slow down their hot takes for a moment and remember after Tuesday that no matter who wins the GOP primary for Governor that the current Governor is the target for defeat in November.

If Donald Trump can overlook a slight that the “grassroots” finds intolerable, why should those grassroots people give a damn if the goal is defeating Whitmer?

Sometimes you just have to wonder.
