Really is good to be the Governor of the State of Michigan as Gretchen Whitmer has found out.
You get a mini-mansion in Lansing Michigan for you and the family. A summer residence on one of the premier locations in the United States of America on Mackinac Island and you can get really good deals on plane trips without checking Priceline or Expedia.
Truly a sweet gig.
As I covered here last week at Red State, reporter Charlie LeDuff has been on F-I-R-E reporting on the mess that is going on in Michigan on multiple levels. Nursing home deaths being reported or possibly underreported during COVID, the Detroit Police Chief resigning, and the issue of our Governor sneaking out of the state. Michigan Gov Sneaked off to Florida in a Billionaires’ Jet and No One Seems to Care. LeDuff has broken all these stories on his podcast NoBSNewsHour and if you get a chance I suggest you listen to it every week.
As I wrote in my story above at the time, it was not clear who had paid for the Guv to take a jaunt to visit her parental unit…
Had Whitmer booked a round trip flight from Lansing to West Palm Beach through a private charter company, it would likely have cost her $10,000 to $20,000, or a whopping $40,000 for the actual jet she took, according to private jet websites. The latter is more than 25 percent of the governor’s salary — before taxes.
It is unclear whether Whitmer reimbursed the company – Air Eagle – which manages the aircraft owned by the businessmen. And, if so, at what price and from which bank account?
So some super-duper rich guys, the ones that people of Gretch’s ilk are always saying don’t pay enough in taxes and are used as a bogey man pinata, were guilted into letting her use their fancy jet to go to Florida for FOUR DAYS. I’m sure that the fact that they have business with the State of Michigan and she happens to be the Governor is a happy coincidence and there could never be any quid pro quo.
Must be one hell of a nice jet that it would cost 40K to rent for a round trip to Florida. Why fly with the heathens in first class when you can pull those types of favors? Woman of the people indeed.
Well, now we know.
According to a recent report, the Guv only paid $855.00 dollars for her round trip from Michigan to Florida on a 15 million dollar plane. A super-duper helpful non-profit paid the rest of the $27,521 trip.
Like I said at the top, being Governor of Michigan is a really sweet gig.
From the Detroit Free Press…
A nonprofit corporation paid most of the $27,521 cost of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s contentious private plane trip to visit her father, her office said Friday.
Whitmer used her personal funds to pay the $855 cost of her seat, according to a report Whitmer’s office released. That was calculated as the comparable cost of a first-class ticket, spokeswoman Tiffany Brown told the Free Press.
Friday’s disclosures followed weeks of criticism of Whitmer for refusing to say when she left the state to visit her father, Richard Whitmer, during the coronavirus pandemic, at a time Michigan residents were being cautioned about travel.
We were cautioned?
We were pretty much guilt-tripped if we thought about it let alone do it. We might be the cause of killing any loved one or friend if we dared dream of leaving the safe confines of the Great Lakes State. Except of course that Florida, Texas, Alabama, etc. all had lower cases and deaths than we did in Michigan. According to the data.
So what exactly is the Michigan Transition 2019 magical fund that paid 97% of the Governor’s trip to Florida? According to the Detroit Free Press, it is…
Michigan Transition 2019 was incorporated in 2018 under Section 501c4 of the Internal Revenue Code, state records show. Such “social welfare” nonprofit funds are commonly used by state and local officeholders but have been the source of past controversies, notably for former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and for former Republican Gov. Rick Snyder, whose NERD (New Energy to Reinvent and Diversify) Fund was the subject of criticism for not disclosing its corporate donors and for paying the salary of a top Snyder aide, Richard Baird.
Michigan Transition 2019 was initially set up to pay expenses related to Whitmer’s inauguration but has since been used for other officeholder expenses, such as consulting, records show.
So fly on a private jet to visit your Dad, who is sick in the hopes that no one in the press or the public finds out to ROAST you for demanding that no one else do the same as you do. She is a beacon of virtue, isn’t she?
The issue is not going to visit a sick relative but that she lectured the rest of us to not do so. We may not see another holiday with them if we visited because we might kill them with the virus. Yet she went to Florida with no first or second shot of the vaccine to visit her Dad that had been vaccinated. If he is sick with pre-existing conditions and she is not following the protocol the state has been demanding doesn’t that put her Dad at risk?
Must really be nice to be Governor and not have to follow your own admonishments of how to keep your loved ones safe.
Are you sick of this yet, Michigan?
