Prayer Rooms and To-Go Meals: VA Public Schools Roll Out Special Ramadan Perks for Muslim Students

We are nearly one week into Ramadan – the month-long commemoration of the time when Muslims believe the Quran was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad – and it sounds like Muslim public school students in Virginia are enjoying some serious Ramadan perks that don't seem to be offered to students of other religions when they celebrate their holiest days.

One X account that tracks the political goings-on in the Charlottesville area discovered that local students who observe Ramadan are able to partake of special prayer rooms and can grab to-go meals before they depart school at the end of the day. The local CBS affiliate had glowingly reported on the perks being enjoyed by Muslim students, noting the local school system was "going the extra mile" for them.

Charlottesville City Schools is working to ensure students of all religious backgrounds feel supported, and during Ramadan, the district says it is going the extra mile to meet the needs of Muslim students.

Rodney Jordan, principal at Charlottesville Middle School, bragged, “I think it shows the inclusivity of Charlottesville City Schools." The prayer room accommodations, says Jordan, are available to students during the entire school year. “Even before Ramadan begins, we support our students who need to pray, so we provide a space for them here in our building,” he revealed.

In addition to the prayer rooms, students who are fasting during the day are given the privilege of spending lunchtime in classrooms or other designated areas of the school. And once they're ready to go home, they can grab a special school-provided meal to eat after sunset. “The meals will be prepared here in our building, and our students will be able to take them home with them,” Jordan said.

A mother in the Prince William County school district posted on X that something similar was happening at her children's middle school, and shared a communication from the unnamed school showing that prayer rooms were available and Muslim students were allowed to miss class to make use of them.

All of this, of course, begs the question: are Christians also getting special perks as they mark Lent, the solemn season leading up to Easter? Are special meat-free dinners being provided on Fridays for Catholic students to take home? Can students miss class time to say a Rosary or a few Our Fathers?

Here in Loudoun County, where I live, that doesn't seem to be the case. While Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) provide to-go meals to its Muslim public school students during Ramadan, no similar perk is offered to Christian students observing Lent. In fact, Lent – or Easter, for that matter! – is never mentioned anywhere on the LCPS website, but Eid al Fitr, the ending of Ramadan, snagged a spot on the official school calendar.

One wonders where the "separation of church and state!" crowd is on the matter of Muslim prayer rooms and special religious meals being provided by taxpayers, but they were too busy not cheering for the US men's hockey team to comment.
