The 'Party of Tolerance' Can’t Tolerate John Fetterman—Here's What Democrats Are Planning for '28

Earlier this week, Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) made a small, but poignant, gesture on his X account: he unpinned a nearly two-year-old tweet showing the display of Israeli hostage posters outside his Senate office. He vowed to keep the posters up and the tweet pinned to the top of his account until every hostage returned home. At last, they were all home—although not all the bodies of the deceased hostages have been returned—so the tweet was able to go on its merry way.

Sen. Fetterman was possibly the strongest pro-Israel voice from the Democrat Party over the last few years. He regularly met with families of the hostages and happily gave the stink eye to pro-Hamas protestors when they would try to disrupt his life. Dare I say his leadership on this issue warmed the hearts of many conservatives? But, of course, there is always a political cost to be paid when you lead on an issue, particularly when your own party didn't ask you to lead on it.

Fetterman Has Some Sage Advice for Schumer on a Government Shutdown

And, it looks like Fetterman is about find out what his party thinks of his independent, yet decidedly still very leftist, voice. Pennsylvania Democrats are reportedly already hard at work on a plan to prevent his reelection in 2028 by running several state heavyweights against him in the primary.

According to a Thursday report in Axios, Democrats are in active recruitment mode in their efforts to take out Fetterman.

  • Potential Democratic challengers are already bashing Fetterman — and each other — years ahead of schedule.
  • Some Democratic officials are openly contemplating running against Fetterman or keeping the door open to a Senate bid in the event he retires.

Some names being bandied about to take on Fetterman in the primary include current Reps. Brendan Boyle and Chris Deluzio and former Rep. Conor Lamb.

So, what exactly has Fetterman done to incur his party's wrath? It's not just his pro-Israel stance, it's also the fact that he doesn't follow the Democrat Party playbook. He doesn't dress the part. Conservatives like him because he's sometimes willing to find common ground and oftentimes ticks off his own party. He stands athwart Capitol Hill norms, which makes him fun to watch. And that gives Fetterman a certain kind of power that Democrats are unable to control, which they clearly see as a threat to the party.

There's been a lot of speculation over the last few years about whether or not Fetterman would switch over to the Republican Party, although he himself has never even hinted at it. And, in truth, he is staunchly leftist in his views, which is borne out in his voting record. One group gave him a 6% "Trump Score," meaning he's rarely aligned with the administration. Switching parties makes no sense at all.

If Democrats are serious about ousting Fetterman, that certainly would be confirmation they are embracing a "small tent" ethos for their party. If you play nice with the GOP on occasion, you've got to go. Say something nice about President Trump? Sayonara. Opt out of toeing the party line? See ya.

Fetterman himself doesn't seem one bit worried about primary challengers, telling Axios to "Enjoy your clickbait!" when asked to comment on the story. When asked a follow-up question to that blunt response, Fetterman simply said, "Please do not contact."

Editor’s Note: The Schumer Shutdown is here. Rather than put the American people first, Chuck Schumer and the radical Democrats forced a government shutdown for healthcare for illegals. They own this.
