According to a report, "Kirk's casket will be flown back on Air Force Two to Phoenix, Arizona, likely on Thursday night, along with his family and friends." Vice President and Mrs. Vance will also make the journey. Kirk's organization, Turning Point USA, is headquartered in Phoenix, and the Kirk family made their home there.

New: FBI Releases Photo of 'Person of Interest' in Charlie Kirk Murder Case

As RedState reported earlier, the vice president was originally planning to be at Ground Zero in New York City on Thursday morning to commemorate the 24-year anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. He deviated from those plans in order to fly to Utah to be with Kirk's family and friends, and now will have the sorrowful duty of bringing his friend Charlie home.

In a lengthy Wednesday night post on X, Vance recounted his first interaction with Kirk back in 2017, telling how their friendship grew over the years as they bonded over things like family, religion, and, yes, the doubts—now erased—they once had about Donald Trump being president. From our earlier story:

Charlie Kirk was one of the first people Vance turned to in 2021 to when he was beginning to think about running for the open Senate seat in Ohio. Vance himself was somewhat skeptical there was a path to victory, but Kirk not only helped him gameplan it out, he also introduced the vice president to donors and grassroots activists who could help make it happen.

And Kirk was there for Vance as he ascended to be the second most powerful man in the world. It's clear that Charlie Kirk not only played a big role in JD Vance's entry into the political world, but Kirk also played a pivotal role in rallying conservatives behind the Trump-Vance team.

Kirk was also a source of strength when Vance became the vice presidential nominee, as Vance began to feel guilty about the toll the position would take on his young family. A father to two young children himself, Kirk "was constantly calling and texting [Vance], checking on our family and offering guidance and prayers."

Vance fondly told of a group chat that he and Kirk were in: "We celebrate weddings and babies, bust each other's chops, and mourn the loss of loved ones. We talk about politics and policy and sports and life. These group chats include people at the very highest level of our government. They trusted him, loved him, and knew he'd always have their backs."

Vice President Vance has yet to comment publicly on his meeting with the Kirk family or the plans to accompany Kirk's body home to Arizona, but it's likely that the vice president considers it a great honor to offer this ultimate show of respect to his friend and fellow patriot.

RedState's Ward Clark reported earlier Thursday that the FBI is seeking the public's help in identifying a person of interest related to Kirk's assassination Wednesday on the campus of Utah Valley University.

RedState will, of course, bring you all the latest on Charlie Kirk's final journey home.
