Steve Bannon Sees His Future Schemes Dissolve in Inglorious Fashion

Well, Steve Bannon has been on a losing streak, it seems.

His last, actual “win” was getting Roy Moore into the Alabama Senate race, over Mitch McConnell-pick, Luther Strange, and the much more qualified Mo Brooks.

Everything after that has pretty much been in free fall, hasn’t it?

While Wednesday’s news was all about Bannon’s comments in the upcoming Michael Wolff book, “Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House,” and the subsequent public trashing of the Breitbart big boss by the White House, it appears that’s not the only rejection Bannon has to deal with today.

He’s now lost his billionaire Mercer bankroll: Rebekah Mercer.

What happened?

A person close to Mercer told The Washington Post that she no longer supports Bannon. According to the report, Mercer was frustrated with Bannon’s strategy in the Alabama Senate Race, and pulled her funding after he told other major conservative donors that Mercer would back Bannon in his own presidential bid.

President Bannon. The stuff of nightmares.

There’s mention of a Bannon presidential run in 2020 in the Wolff book, and you have to wonder if that was Bannon’s play, all along.

The Mercers have been the big money backing for Breitbart News. Rebekah Mercer bought a stake in the site from her father several months ago, but with this new revelation, it’s unclear if she’ll continue to back the site.

One thing for certain: She’s no longer backing any Bannon projects.

So what is Bannon’s standing with the audience he’s built through Breitbart?

“The core constituency for Breitbart is what you would call the Trump Deplorables. That’s the audience. And if they’re asked to choose between Steve and Trump, they’re going to choose Trump. That’s clear,” a person familiar with Breitbart News’ operations told The Post.

Some of that was felt yesterday, amid all of the reveals from the book, as posters to the Breitbart discussion pages trashed Bannon.

Also, following one story posted to the Breitbart News’ Twitter page offered a sampling of the mood:

Yes, the red cappers are perturbed.

It’s hard to say if Bannon recovers from this. It seems he’d put all his eggs in the Trump basket, and maybe he did give himself too much credit for drawing people onto the Branch Trumpidian compound.

Do you know who’s really giggling over this, this morning?

Anthony Scaramucci.

I have a feeling the Mooch is enjoying every last bit of schadenfreude.

I know I’m rooting for injuries.
