As the remaining football fans gathered in Tampa for Super Bowl LV to have some fun in a venue that was largely free of the Wuhan virus lockdown (thank you, Governor DeSantis), our media, ever faithful to science, the truth, and whatever they are told to say by people they need to suck up to for access, was obsessed by the idea that the Super Bowl…and your personal Super Bowl party…would become a “super spreader event.” What is a “superspreader event?” Good question. Anytime one encounters a boogeyman phrase, one should find out exactly what it means. This is from Brittanica.com
In the realm of infectious disease, a superspreader event stands out from other gatherings of individuals because the number of cases of disease that can be traced back to the event is disproportionately high relative to the transmission of the disease in the general population. Superspreader events are made worse by the presence of superspreaders—individuals who infect many other people, sometimes as many as 15 or 20 others. Superspreaders are in contrast to individuals who are infected with the disease but spread it to no one else or to just one or two other individuals.
Strictly speaking, a super spreader event requires the presence of several people with Wuhan virus. Nebraska Medical Center has this to offer:
Casinos, restaurant meals, choir practice, churches, funerals and birthday parties – after going to these types of events, many have tested positive for COVID-19.
What do these superspreader events have in common? To understand how COVID-19 spreads, consider these three Vs:
- Venue: Multiple people indoors, where social distancing is often harder
- Ventilation: Staying in one place with limited fresh air
- Vocalization: Lots of talking, yelling or singing, which can aerosolize the virus
Efforts to describe these events strongly resemble Potter Stewart’s definition of pornography: I can’t describe it but I’ll know it when I see it.
This is just a taste of the coverage:
CBS: How the NFL is trying to stop the Super Bowl from becoming a super-spreader event
AP: Officials plead: Don’t let Super Bowl become superspreader
ABC: Wild Super Bowl celebrations in Tampa prompt COVID super-spreader worries
Washington Post: Thousands of maskless Tampa fans flooded the streets, celebrating the Super Bowl win while risking a superspreader event

Now the numbers are in and to the dismay of the Karenwaffen, their fears about the Super Bowl, just like their fears about most everything else, seem quaint and misplaced. This is from USA Today: Health officials say Super Bowl 55 events were not a COVID-19 super spreader in Tampa.
Hillsborough County health officials have determined that official events held around Super Bowl 55 resulted in 57 total COVID-19 cases, despite the thousands of fans who traveled to Tampa to attends the game and surrounding events.
In a press conference that was streamed on WFLA, a local NBC affiliate, Hillsborough County chief epidemiologist Michael Wiese said there were 53 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the state of Florida linked to the Super Bowl, while four out-of-state cases were tracked to the event.
This has become a tired and repetitive scare tactic by the pandemic porn peddlers. Remember back last summer and all the panic surrounding the Sturgis motorcycle rally. There were 460,000 participants, the majority of whom were focused on trying to have zero social distance with other people. What happened? There were 414 verified Wuhan virus cases, read Prominent China Virus Task Force Member Gets All Stompy-Foot Over the Under Classes Not Doing What They are Told. The media tried to pin the “superspreader” rap on President Trump’s campaign rallies. No evidence ever linked the rallies to a China virus outbreak. The most obscene happening was the brazen attempt by the media and Democrats to make the open-air announcement of the nomination of Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court into a “superspreader event. The most bizarre was characterizing the riot in the US Capitol on January 6 as a “superspreader event”: Storming of Capitol was textbook potential coronavirus superspreader, experts say
The fact of the matter is simple and stark. The people who have been making rules for the rest of us to follow don’t appear to know their ass from a hot rock and they are eager and willing to lie to you just to maintain their 15-minutes of fame and to get someone, anyone, to listen to them and not laugh in their face.
There is a lesson. The moral panic in media coverage over *possible* spreader events rarely reflects the actual viral trend. The record is rarely corrected. Give people info, not freakouts. That corny Grim Reaper guy on a beach is not a data point.https://t.co/6K1Yb4WHz7
