Yesterday FBI Director James Comey held a closed door meeting with the Senate Intelligence Committee. That committee is looking into allegations of Russian meddling in the 2016 election. The Democrats and media want the investigation expanded to include alleged contacts between members of Trump’s campaign and various Russian entities.

Senators investigating President Donald Trump’s ties to Russia held a closed-door meeting on Friday with FBI Director James Comey amid an uproar on Capitol Hill over alleged contacts between Trump aides and Moscow.

Sen. Mark Warner, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, said as he left the meeting he was confident the intelligence panel would have access to the documents it needs to carry out its investigation of the issue.

“We have put in a process to make sure that we are going to get access to the information we need,” the Virginia senator said. “I have a high level of confidence that we’ll get what we need.”

Warner and others members of the Intelligence Committee declined to comment specifically on what was discussed in the meeting with Comey.

But Warner said he continued to support the Intelligence Committee’s investigation, led by Chairman Richard Burr (R-N.C), into Russia’s meddling in November’s presidential election — a probe that’s expected to delve into contacts between Russian officials and the Trump team, possibly including former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn.

Warner’s remarks come as other Democrats who are not on the intelligence panel are privately voicing concern the secretive, Republican-led committee could end up burying the investigation, according to sources familiar with the matter. Many Democrats and a few Republicans have called for a broader, select committee to handle the investigation.

This is report is pretty much a Rorschach test for where you stand.

To me (a major disbeliever in the idea that the Russians had any influence at all on the outcome of the election and who believes their objective was to damage Hillary Clinton who they, along with just about everyone else, saw as the inevitable winner) the salient points are that there was no triumphalism in the Democrat statements and there have been no leaks of what Comey said. If there was anything new or damaging in the briefing, I’m pretty sure it would have been foreshadowed by public Democrat statements and the substance would have been on the front page of the New York Times by last night.

At some point I suspect the chairman, Richard Burr, will cave to Democrat demands and investigate some of the contacts Paul Manafort and Carter Page had with the Russians. I also suspect we’ll find that those conversations were much more concerned with business deals than politics. From a panicked letter by Page, I suspect that at least one of that duo will end up indicted and doing hard time.

That part of the investigation will be used by the Democrats to divert attention from the fact that the whole Russian-meddling meme peddled by Obama and John Brennan was false right down to every last detail.
