San Francisco Archbishop Savatore Cordileone has stunned his archdiocese by revealing he is, in fact, Catholic.

Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone faced hundreds of teachers from four Catholic high schools Friday for the first time since announcing his intent to include morality clauses in their handbook and labor contract, but did little to ease the anger and fear associated with the new language, teachers said.

A teacher could face punishment or dismissal for “escorting a woman into an abortion clinic, handing out contraception to students, or for being a member of a white supremacist group,” Cordileone said, according to a recording made by someone present during the question-and-answer session that followed a morning Mass for school staff. Media were barred from attending.

Gay marriage could also be grounds for dismissal, said Cordileone, head of an archdiocese that includes San Francisco, San Mateo, and Marin counties.

The sexual morality clauses outline Church teachings — including opposition to abortion, contraception, artificial insemination, and same-sex marriage — and the need for teachers to honor the Catholic beliefs in both their professional and private lives.

It’s about “making more explicit what our schools are called to uphold, even in the face of social pressure,” Cordileone said.

The story here should be that the faculty, administration, and students of a Catholic schools system, which is supposed to provide faith formation in addition to secular education, could actually protest against having to be Catholic. But the story is how a meanie archbishop is being all meanie to the sexual deviants who have found a home in that school system.

One of the grave errors many of our (I say this because I am a Catholic) have made is to try to be popular. Righteousness is rarely popular and few things damage an organization that should be focused on the salvation of souls like indulging int the self-affirming bull**** that has led to serial divorces, abortion, IVF, homosexual marriage, and the list goes on and on. The Church’s failing, across the board, is thinking that acquiescing to the popular zeitgeist leads to popularity. When the Church requires a life time commitment from its priests and religious, a commitment that entails celibacy and continence and financial insecurity, it must stand for something worth the sacrifice. It is no coincidence that the dioceses under the most traditional and uncompromising bishops have the highest number of men in seminaries. The feel good dioceses suffer from a shortage.

After decades of moral rot, the Archdiocese of San Francisco is being reminded that it is religious organization. I hope Archbishop Cordileone has the guts to make his decision stick.
