Moore to the Point - SCOTUS Interruptus

Political rhetoric is dangerous and protesting politicians and governmental institutions is a threat to democracy – or so we’re told. There’s a catch to that, though – these rules only seem to apply to those on the right side of the political spectrum. If you’re on the left, it’s fine to use overly heated rhetoric, to “get in the faces” of political opponents, to protest violently and disrupt governmental proceedings.

Case in point: On Wednesday, several protesters managed to get into the Supreme Court and interrupt oral arguments (on a bankruptcy regulation case) to shout about their “freedom to choose” being taken away. Setting aside the rudeness (and the utter illogic of) this stunt, imagine if protesters from the right had interrupted Supreme Court arguments on Obamacare – or gay marriage. Legacy media headlines would be screaming about the gross impropriety and the severe danger such “fringe extremists” present “to our democracy.” Chuck Schumer, rather than warning justices they would pay a price for their decisions, would be denouncing the protests and accusing the right of posing an existential threat.

But Wednesday’s protest came from the left. And, as with the protests outside conservative justices’ homes, will be tacitly approved if not outright sanctioned by the media and leaders on the left. Because for them, the ends justify the means.
