As the hyperbole and hand-wringing continue due to the “zero tolerance” border policy put in place recently by the Trump administration as a form of deterrence against illegal immigration, the president took to Twitter Monday to make the case he’s trying to keep the U.S. safe from the migrant crisis facing European Union countries like Germany.

Trump specifically mentioned the problems faced by German Chancellor Angela Merkel as she battles her interior minister who wants Germany to turn away migrants who have registered with other EU nations.

Additionally, Trump maintained there are fixes to be had on the immigration issue, but that Democrats are to blame for “being weak and ineffective with border security and crime.”

That sentiment was echoed Monday morning by White House deputy press assistant Hogan Gidley, who implied that the situation could be addressed and fixed quickly except for Democrats’ desire to use the situation to their political advantage.

As it stands, the number of minors detained at the border approaches 30,000, and the social media outcry has been loud and unpleasant. Many of the minors were unaccompanied by adults, but some were separated from their parents when the adults were arrested for attempting to illegally enter the country.

The House of Representatives is set to vote on two pieces of immigration legislation this week that could have some bearing on the border issue.
