Ok, this is just funny, like the President or not.

Disclosure: I’m not shilling for the president here as much as I’m holding the press to account because they need it.

Yesterday, before a business meeting with the nation’s governors, President Donald Trump gave a 20-minute mini-speech to pool reporters regarding several different topics, including the shooting in Parkland, Fla. During the pre-meeting presser, Trump said he believed he personally would have run into the school as a way to question the reaction of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School resource officer who chose (possibly was ordered) not to enter during the rampage.

This — surprise! — led to quite a bit of mocking from the Twitter intelligentsia because there’s NO WAY Trump could be brave, right? He’s just such a bad guy it’s impossible he might actually have a sense of moral courage. Most of the mocking looked like this:

Despite the fact that during the 20-minute mini-speech Trump also said a great many other things, some of which made a degree of sense (like his thoughts on mental health institutions and the role of state governors in their creation and sustainability), reporters jumped on that nugget almost exclusively and the guffawing began.

Then came Tuesday. At some point, journalists are going to start getting back to the job of reporting the news — which includes waiting for the facts before making fools of themselves — because, turns out, Trump has a history of rushing in to stop a crime.

People are mocking Trump for saying he'd run into the school to stop the shooter today… BUT in 1991, he had his driver pull over his car to run out of it to stop a mugging.

Long before he was president, Donald Trump once stopped a man armed with a baseball bat in the process of mugging someone, according to news reports.

The 1991 incident gained new attention Tuesday after Trump commented that he would run into a school to confront a shooter, even if he was unarmed. Trump was criticizing reports that the sheriff’s deputy stationed at the Stoneman Douglas High School who did not enter the building during a mass shooting where 17 students died Feb. 14…

Trump got out of his car and approached the man with the baseball bat. Trump said the attacker, “a big guy with a big bat,” delivered five or six “good whacks” before he arrived at the scene.

“The guy with the bat looked at me, and I said, ‘Look, you’ve gotta stop this. Put down the bat,’” Trump told The Daily News. “I guess he recognized me because he said, ‘Mr. Trump, I didn’t do anything wrong.’ I said, ‘How could you not do anything wrong when you’re whacking a guy with a bat?’ Then he ran away.”

Of course, there are conflicting reports, with one witness insisting Trump didn’t actually do anything once  he got out of the car.

But he did pull the limo over and get out, that part is undisputed.

So I ask you, reporters mocking the President for saying he thought he might reflexively rush into the high school in Florida: would you have pulled over to stop a mugging, or just casually glanced out the window, felt sorry for the victim, and carried on to wherever you were headed?
