New: Schumer Awkwardly Fumbles Through Questions About the DSA Again, and AOC Has to Be Loving It

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (NY-08) and Sen. Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) have been very cagey anytime they've been asked about the rise of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) in their party.

But while Jeffries has at least indicated areas where he disagrees with the DSA (he says he doesn't believe in defunding the police and having open borders, for instance), Schumer has been more evasive, perhaps in an effort to try and stave off a 2028 primary challenge from Democrat Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY-14), a prominent DSA member who has been critical of his leadership and who hasn't ruled out any future political options.

For instance, here's where he was in July, before DSA-backed Abdul El-Sayed won the Michigan Democrat Senate primary, yada-yadaing about how Democrats across the board were united in opposing President Trump and defeating the MAGA agenda:

Schumer: Trump!

More recently, however, Schumer has slightly adjusted his tune. While he's still skirting the line on the rise of DSA membership in the Democrat Party, he seems to have gotten more... accommodating, as indicated by statements made during this Thursday press conference - where the subject was the midterm elections:

We’re a big tent party. And not everyone has the same exact view on every single issue. But if you look at the overall issues, the costs that people pay, the chaos in the Trump administration, you see it daily.

So we are a big tent party, and we’re united on the major issues facing America.

He also praised some of the DSA-backed candidates, bizarrely suggesting they "fit their states" without explaining what that meant:

And though he has technically endorsed El-Sayed (post-primary - pre-primary, he backed Rep. Haley Stevens), he's not saying if he'll go campaign with him:

So... like, how does El-Sayed "fit" purple Michigan, when barely half of the Democrats who voted in the primary voted for him, where his GOP opponent, Trump-backed former congressman Mike Rogers, is openly trolling him about peeling off Democrat support? How does Angie Nixon "fit" Florida, a red state that has soundly rejected socialism at the state level over the last several election cycles?

Further, Schumer needs to explain exactly why radical far-leftists who want to abolish the Senate, our borders, the presidency, and the Supreme Court, and who seek to advance communism are welcomed lovingly with open arms in the Democrat Party. I mean, this should be considered extremism by any definition, and you can guaran-darn-tee that if Republicans were coming into the House or Senate with such ideas, Schumer and Jeffries would be screaming from the rafters about "muh democracy is at stake!"

Schumer can't explain any of this because he's trying desperately to straddle the line for two reasons: He wants Democrat control of the Senate again, and he's terrified of earning the wrath of AOC. The problem is, though, if they do retake the Senate with the help of El-Sayed and Nixon, neither one of them is going to support him for leader, and there are probably more who are currently in the Senate that would go along with them.

Truly, he has nowhere to turn here, so he's trying to appease all sides. In the end, the DSA is gonna get the best of him, and politically speaking, he's going to lose the battle.
