As RedState reported, there was an attack in Michigan on Thursday involving a rifle-wielding madman who crashed his car into a West Bloomfield Township synagogue in a "targeted act of violence against the Jewish community," according to the FBI.

Fortunately, all 140 children at Temple Israel's child care center, along with clergy and staff, were unharmed. One security guard was injured but is expected to be okay, and numerous first responders had to be treated for smoke inhalation. The only person to perish in the attack was the perpetrator, Dearborn Heights resident Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, either from his vehicle catching on fire or from security personnel who engaged him immediately.

Late Thursday evening, The Detroit Free Press reported that, per a neighbor, Ghazali had family members who were killed in a recent Israeli strike in Lebanon. Not surprisingly, that information is now being used by Democrats and some in the press to insinuate that Ghazali was justified in his terroristic actions.

The statement issued by Dearborn Heights Mayor Mo Baydoun is a case study in the "whataboutism" sickness that plagues the Democrat Party when attacks that don't fit their preferred narratives happen. Also note how he refers to the attack early on as merely an "incident":

Earlier today, we learned that the individual responsible for the incident that took place at Temple Israel Synagogue in West Bloomfield was a resident of Dearborn Heights. He died at the scene. Earlier this month, he lost several members of his own family, including his niece and nephew, in an Israeli attack on their home in Lebanon.

Everyone deserves to worship in peace, and we must unequivocally condemn any attack on a house of worship or the people within it.

This tragedy comes at a time when communities everywhere are confronting rising hate and senseless violence. No matter where violence occurs, whether in West Bloomfield or anywhere around in the world, harm against innocent people is something we must all stand firmly against. The tensions we see across the world too often find their way into our own neighborhoods, reminding us how deeply connected our shared safety is.

I want our community to know that we are working closely with our police department and regional partners to protect the safety of every house of worship in our city. I urge residents to stay aware and vigilant, especially as we gather during these sacred final days of Ramadan. Let’s continue to care for one another and pay attention to anything that feels out of place.

Though the mayor mentioned two of the family members who were allegedly killed in the Israeli strike, what he left out were Lebanese-sourced reports that two other family members who were also killed were members of Hezbollah:

Ghazali was originally from Mashghara, a town in Lebanon’s Beqaa Valley. Israeli airstrikes on the town in the country’s south last week killed two of Ghazali’s adult brothers, as well as Ghazali’s niece and nephew, the Lebanese official told NBC News.

The two brothers were known to be members of Hezbollah, the Iranian-backed militant group, the official said. But it was unclear what role they played in the organization or whether they were the target of the strike.

Baydoun, I should note, is also of Lebanese descent, and in 2024, when he was a city councilman, it was also reported that he lost family members in another Israeli strike in Lebanon, so he undoubtedly feels a kinship of sorts with the terrorist in the Thursday attack:

Council member Baydoun learned his 40-year-old cousin Batoul Dabaja-Saad was at home in South Lebanon with her entire family this week celebrating her son Mohamed Hassan Saad's birthday when an airstrike hit their home, killing the entire family.

Any loss of innocent life is tragic. But it doesn't justify targeting synagogues. It doesn't justify targeting Christian elementary schools. It doesn't justify targeting innocents - period.

Indeed.
