Sad Trombone: The 'Blexas' Movement Gets More Potentially Bad News Ahead of 2026

Townhall Media

It seems like with nearly every election cycle, we are told by our supposed intellectual betters on the left/in the media that Blexas was happening, that this was the election cycle that would finally turn Texas blue.

We saw this, for instance, with the Ted Cruz/Beto O'Rourke Senate race in 2018. We were treated to endless fawning from the Usual Suspects over O'Rourke, with frequent comparisons of him to members of the Kennedy family. Even Beto himself would do this, as shared in an interview with Town and Country Magazine at the time in a piece that described him as "a Kennedyesque longshot in a roiling red state."

Describing people who wanted to have their picture taken with him during a Cambridge, MA, trip after he won his congressional race in 2012, he claimed, "It dawns on me: They don’t think I’m Beto, they think I’m Joe Kennedy, or at least some Kennedy." When he told them who he was, O'Rourke stated he "could just see the thrill go out of their eyes.”

After the 2024 elections, there were declarations that "Blexas is dead" based in part on the presidential election results for the Lone Star State, which saw Vice President Kamala Harris get about 450,000 votes less than Joe Biden did in 2020.

But, y'all, Blexas might be about to surge for real this time in 2026 because Democrat Rep. Jasmine Crockett (TX-30) is floating a possible 2026 Senate run:

Texas Democratic Rep. Jasmine Crockett is taking further steps toward launching a Senate campaign, including spending significant money on polling and meeting with a potential campaign manager.

Crockett told POLITICO’s Dasha Burns in an episode of “The Conversation” that she’s “seriously weighing” a bid to replace GOP Sen. John Cornyn and is commissioning polling to see how she stacks up against a potentially crowded primary field.

“I am seriously weighing it, to the extent that I’m about to spend a lot of money to get data,” she said.

She says she was inspired in part by the fact that Texas had redrawn her district, and also because she has seen data that suggests she could win the primary race:

"The other option is every other day there's a poll that comes out that makes it clear that I can win the primary for the U.S. Senate race in Texas, and I am looking, because if you want to take my seat of 766,000 away, I feel like there has to be some karma in that to where I take your seat that is for 30 million away," Crockett said in the Sirius.

In the event she decides not to run, or does but falls short in the primary, Crockett has also made clear she'd love to challenge Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) in 2030:

Crockett has infamously used violent language when describing Republicans, and has called for Cruz to "be knocked over the head, like, hard."

I'm of the mindset that Republicans should never take their foot, metaphorically speaking, off the gas, even in congressional districts and states where they've historically had a lot of electoral victories. The idea is to treat every campaign like you're 20 points behind - if you're 20 points ahead.

That includes Texas, where even Cruz has pointed out Republicans shouldn't take the state for granted, noting Democrats have poured hundreds of millions into the state in past election cycles.

That said, I suspect Cruz and whichever Republican wins the contested 2026 GOP Senate primary would almost pay money to have Crockett jump into the race because not only would it ensure an entertaining Dems in Disarray primary scenario but also because, in the event of a primary win, they would get to portray her as the face of Texas Democrats and national Democrats much like we've seen happen with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY-14) and, more recently, with NYC Democrat mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani.
