Oh, to be a fly on the wall at Kamala Harris HQ today after the big "unity" speech she gave at the Ellipse Tuesday night was effectively sabotaged by President Joe Biden calling supporters of GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump "garbage" during a "Voto Latino" call designed to shore up the Hispanic vote.

I say "sabotage" because that's really what it looks like for those of us sitting in the cheap seats watching all this play out. 

As my colleague Ward Clark once observed, "The Bidens do seem to be trodding on Harris' toes, and it's really looking deliberate."

The key word there is "Bidens" (with an "s") because we know if there was indeed a plan afoot that Joe wouldn't be the one orchestrating it. It would be his handler-in-chief, Jill Biden, who as we've learned from past reports was not supportive of Biden choosing Harris to be his running mate and who is said to have a tense relationship with the vice president in part because of that:

So Harris, during one of the Democratic primary debates, she basically calls him a segregationist. It becomes a moment in which Harris receives a bump in the polls. It’s very temporary. And in exchange for that slight bump, she earns a very visceral reaction from Jill Biden, who essentially says, “Go f**k yourself.”

So Jill Biden is very angry about this. There was one moment in 2022 where Jill Biden goes to a fundraiser in San Francisco, which is Kamala Harris’ home turf, and is hearing from donors about how much they hope Kamala Harris is serving the Bidens and how proud they are of her — “We just hope she represents us well” meaning San Francisco.

And Jill Biden, who is a very classically trained fundraising political spouse, doesn’t say anything, takes a beat to the point where it’s awkward and says, “But what about Ketanji?” steering the conversation away from a very fulsome compliment of the vice president toward her husband’s pick for the Supreme Court, Ketanji Brown Jackson.

Needless to say, after Biden's "quiet part out loud" moment amid Harris' "closing argument" Tuesday, some folks had some thoughts about Jill's whereabouts:

Come to think of it, Dr. Jill hasn't been seen much since Joe Biden was forced out of the presidential race back in July. Kinda makes you wonder.

I love that every time Kamala gets a little head of steam, worth about 2 hours of a news cycle, Biden swoops in with some bonehead move and changes the narrative.
