While Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas will undoubtedly go down in history for conservatives as one of the greatest SCOTUS members of all time, the view of him from the left is – not surprisingly – much different, which we first saw during his 1991 confirmation hearings when then-Sen. Joe Biden led the way in using vile gutter tactics to try and derail the nomination of a conservative black jurist who dared to think differently, and who famously refused to give up under mounting pressure.
Not much has changed in how Thomas is viewed by Democrats, unfortunately. In fact, the treatment of Thomas by his rabidly partisan critics has gotten much worse over the 30+ years he’s served on our nation’s highest court, with the occasional cries for “impeachment” surfacing and, much more disturbingly, calls for his death. There has also been the disgusting targeting of his wife Ginni over the fact that she, like former President Donald Trump, believed there was something fishy about the 2020 presidential election results.
Most recently, however, in the aftermath of the Friday Supreme Court ruling striking down Roe v. Wade a petition was started in which students at George Washington University demanded the higher-ups remove Thomas from his post as an adjunct professor at the law school. Here was the stated rationale:
With the recent Supreme Court decision that has stripped the right to bodily autonomy of people with wombs, and with his explicit intention to further strip the rights of queer people and remove the ability for people to practice safe sex without fear of pregnancy, it is evident that the employment of Clarence Thomas at George Washington University is completely unacceptable. While also factoring in his wife’s part in the attempted coup in January of 2021, Judge Thomas is actively making life unsafe for thousands of students on our campus (not to mention thousands of campuses across the country). Make your voice heard and help us kick Clarence Thomas out of Foggy Bottom.
The short version of GWU’s response was to tell them, in a nutshell, to shove it. The long version of their response can be read below:
George Washington University just sent out a letter to all students rejecting calls to fire Clarence Thomas as an adjunct professor, or to cancel his longstanding Constitutional Law Seminar, and broadly defending debate. Good. pic.twitter.com/nSNPVXTmmU

Prominent GWU law professor Jonathan Turley praised the school for rejecting the call to dump Thomas, and reiterated his respect and appreciation for him:
George Washington University just issued a statement rejecting the campaign to force Justice Clarence Thomas off our faculty as an adjunct professor. Rather than yield to another cancel campaign, GWU has stood firm on its values of free speech and academic freedom.

… As stated earlier, I hope that Justice Thomas understands that there are many at GWU who are deeply appreciative of his sharing his time and views with our students.

Score another defeat for cancel culture and another victory for Thomas. More, please!
