In the race to try and keep his Senate seat, Georgia Democrat Raphael Warnock is undeniably on the ropes as most polls to date including one from a Democratic polling firm have shown his potential GOP opponent Herschel Walker maintaining a lead over him in hypothetical matchups.

What’s turning out to be the biggest challenge for Warnock is his affiliation with President Biden, whose low approval ratings at both the national and state levels are dragging him down. It’s gotten to the point that Warnock is even laughably trying to present himself as a moderate Democrat to the right of Biden on issues like taxes and border security.

Warnock himself has even indicated he knows he’s in trouble considering he’s running ads where he actually admits he hasn’t done much of anything to write home about in his 15 months as a Senator. Here’s the text from the ad for those who might have missed it:

“I’m Raphael Warnock. I’m a dad, a senator, a pastor, but a magician I’m not. So in just a year in the Senate did I think I could fix Washington? Of course not. But every day I focused on what I could do for our state, creating jobs, fixing infrastructure, expanding healthcare. I approved this message because that’s not magic. That’s doing the job for Georgia.”

One area where Warnock isn’t showing moderation is on the issue of abortion. As we previously reported, in the aftermath of the Monday report detailing the Supreme Court leak on the draft majority opinion written by Justice Samuel Alito noting that “We hold that Roe and Casey must be overruled,” Warnock was among numerous Democrats who were quick to rush to the Twitter machine to voice their support for “a woman’s right to choose”:

As a pro-choice pastor, I’ve always believed that a patient's room is way too small for a woman, her doctor, and the United States government.

As I wrote in response to the tweet, he couldn’t have handed Herschel Walker a bigger gift considering Georgia is not a blue state. It’s a reddish/purpling state, with plenty of middle grounders there who could go either way on these hot button issues. The position he took on abortion rights was not a “middle ground” type of position you see Democrats who try to portray themselves as “moderates” (as Warnock is doing) in battleground states take. His was an unequivocal statement of support for abortion on demand at any stage of pregnancy, and that is an extreme position that Walker will be smart to exploit in the coming months.

Though Warnock has faced criticism from fellow members of the clergy over his stance on abortion, which is inconsistent with Biblical teachings, perhaps no criticism was more cutting and to the point than the one he received this week from former NFL coach-turned-commentator Tony Dungy, who often proudly wears his Christian faith on his sleeve when speaking publicly about the moral issues our country faces.

Here’s what Dungy wrote to Warnock after his pro-abortion message was posted. The question at the end is the most important part of what he said:

It all comes down to what you believe about the organism growing inside the mother. Is it a life or not? If it is just growing tissue then your “choice” makes sense. If it’s a life then it’s obviously not OK to choose to end it. What does your Bible tell you it is? Psalm 139:16 https://t.co/E7dCk6NMmL

For those who don’t know, this is how Psalm 139:16 reads:

Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.

In December 2020 in the midst of Warnock’s campaign against then-Sen. Kelly Loeffler (R), Dungy also confronted Warnock on Twitter about his Christian faith after learning Warnock declared himself to be a “pro-choice pastor”:

Rev Warner may be a pastor. My question would be “Is he a Christian?” That is, does he follow the teachings of Jesus and does he believe that the Bible is the absolute word of God? https://t.co/cabHEGB2XX

Maybe when Warnock stops sticking his foot into his mouth he’ll finally give an answer not just on this question, but also as to why he would support an inhumane practice that disproportionately impacts the black community — because Georgia voters deserve to know. Stay tuned.
