I’m pretty sure no one had “Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives posts a disturbing Valentine’s Day greeting on Twitter” on their bingo card for this week, but the unthinkable has happened.
Most Valentine’s Day messages you see shared on social media every year are either the cutesy/lovey-dovey type or are comments from people who aren’t particularly fond of the day for whatever reasons. But the ATF took a radically different approach in the wording of their post, and it revolved around encouraging people to report their current significant other or ex for alleged “illegal gun activity.”
“Valentine’s Day can still be fun even if you broke up,” it read. “Do you have information about a former (or current) partner involved in illegal gun activity? Let us know, and we will make sure it’s a Valentine’s Day to remember! Call 1-888-ATF-TIPS or email [email protected].”
Here’s how the bizarre tweet looked:

I mean, holy crap, do they not get that they are essentially encouraging disgruntled exes to have their former partners investigated or swatted for no reason other than the fact that they hate them? Not to mention the fact that their tweet comes at a time when no-knock warrants and raids are coming under increased scrutiny after the SWAT-involved shooting death of Minneapolis resident Amir Locke?
There’s also the little matter of how the ATF’s hands, too, are dirty, when one recalls their sordid history, including on the the US/Mexico gun-running sting operation (aka “Fast and Furious“) they were heavily involved in during the Obama administration, an operation that got a lot of innocent people killed including Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry.
On the flip side of things, though, some people did use the opportunity to point the ATF in the direction of President Joe Biden’s son Hunter, who ran into some trouble a few years ago after lying (a felony) about his past drug use when filling out a transaction record prior to (illegally) purchasing a gun, an issue the Secret Service reportedly tried to cover up:
He's not a former or current partner, but here's a tip regarding an illegal gun purchase.

On the lighter side of things, there were these Biden/Harris-themed Valentine’s Day cards that I’m pretty sure would make a grown man or woman cry for all the wrong reasons should they be on the receiving end of one:

Absolute cringe. Don’t be the person to send those cards to anyone, even if in jest. Just don’t…
