When it comes to the “Worst Big City Mayor in America” title, it’s hard to determine the winner: New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) or Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot (D).
My personal opinion is that de Blasio has a slight edge, but Lightfoot is closing in on overtaking that edge thanks how she’s run her city since the pandemic started.
Under her “leadership”, violent crimes including murders are way up in Chicago in the aftermath of the George Floyd protests and the midst of anti-police rhetoric from Democrats, yet she has somehow managed to blame President Trump.
“We’re doing an all-hands-on-deck strategy, we’re really focussing on the root causes of the violence, but fundamentally we have too many illegal guns on our street and that is a direct result of a failure of federal leadership,” Lightfoot told MSNBC Tuesday.
At Thursday’s White House press briefing, press secretary Kayleigh McEnany referenced Chicago’s crime problems twice, the first time by mentioning how Trump was juggling multiple issues at the moment including the fact Democrat mayors like Lightfoot were failing their cities, and the second time by calling Lightfoot a “derelict” mayor:
Reporter: But, Kayleigh, surely you would agree [the coronavirus] is the biggest challenge facing the public right now. Why aren’t we seeing it as the President’s biggest public priority?
McEnany: The President is focusing on a lot. Look, the President, just yesterday, held a big press conference, if you will, or an avail in the Oval Office about MS-13. COVID is something that we’re focused on. It is a top priority of this administration. It’s why the task force meets. It’s why I had mentioned to you we’re taking all those steps. But there are other things the President has to focus on: namely, Democrat cities not controlling their streets; namely, the mayor of Chicago — people dying in her — in her — on the streets of her city every weekend. And the President sent her a letter saying, “You must secure your city.”
[…]
I’ve listed for you the names of these kids who have died across this country. It is unacceptable, and under this President, he’ll take action. And the derelict mayor of Chicago should step up and ask for federal help because she’s doing a very poor job at securing her streets.

Because Lightfoot is infamously more of a tough talker than a doer, this is how she responded:
Hey, Karen. Watch your mouth. pic.twitter.com/zhjRyokKD5
— Mayor Lori Lightfoot (@chicagosmayor) July 16, 2020
McEnany replied by not backing down:
While you‘re focused on words, America is outraged by the violence perpetuated in your city.
One person is taking action to stop violence in our streets: President @realDonaldTrump.
He’s offered your city help. It’s a dereliction of duty not to take it.https://t.co/OFBwDKveax https://t.co/QLhQnQn2eW

Lightfoot’s response also did not go over well with people familiar with her catastrophic leadership failures:
Hey Karen, watch your crime infested city. Oh wait. That’s all you do. Watch. Sit.

"Karen" is right. The only reason you're not the worst mayor in America is the existence of Bill De Blasio.

Or else what? You’ll send the Census Cowboy after her? Do your job.

Indeed. Considering how dire the situation on the ground is in her city, Twitter’s the absolute last place Lightfoot needs to be right now. Either she should do her job and protect Chicago residents, or resign and let someone step in who is willing to actually lead.
