There are perfect moments in American political history and then there are really perfect moments in American political history.

The latter is true in the instance of a 2016 video of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) making a campaign speech in Vallejo, California in May ahead of the June 7th Democratic presidential primary. By this point, both he and Hillary Clinton had been in a slugfest for 6 months in the battle for who’d win their party’s nomination for president.

During the speech, Sanders talked about how the talking heads were saying how “he [Bernie] cannot become president because his ideas are too bold, and are too radical.” But as he said this, a boat went by that displayed a “TRUMP” sign, which is clearly visible in the video:

It doesn’t look like an official Trump campaign sign, so I assume it was a local supporter of Trump’s 2016 campaign who decided to play a joke on Sanders and the crowd who had gathered to hear him speak at the time. The full video is here, and I set it to start at the moment the boat came by (just to confirm the video and the actual words he spoke were authentic).

In any event, the timing was perfect what with Sanders talking about how people had said he couldn’t become president for various reasons. As it turns out, Bernie didn’t win California, nor the Democratic nomination. And Trump, who the media and political commentators on the left and the “Never Trump” right had also said “cannot be president”, went on to defeat Hillary Clinton in the November 2016 presidential election.

Fast forward to February 2020, and the video is making the rounds on social media again. Except this time someone has added a boat horn sound when the boat goes by, and the Bernie’s words (what you can hear of them, anyway) have been changed to where it sounds like he’s talking about something that happened in 1968:

That is just too danged funny. LOL.

What’s ironic in retrospect about this particular speech is in knowing that the city of Vallejo was not paid for expenses they incurred from that rally until nearly two years after it was held – and on top of that, they had to settle for a substantially lower amount of money from the campaign:

Some two years after his historic rally on the Vallejo Waterfront, former presidential candidate Bernie Sanders’ campaign has finally repaid Vallejo for debts incurred for that appearance, city spokeswoman Joanna Altman said.

“We received $29,573.45 in February as final payment,” she said.

The original bill was $65,396, for Police and Fire Department as well as Public Works personnel and materials like barricades, light towers, fencing and special permits and incidentals like food and beverages, radio equipment and such, she said.

Why is the fact that the Sanders campaign stiffed the city for $35,000 not in the least bit surprising? Hmm…
