By most accounts, Tuesday night’s Democratic presidential debate in South Carolina came off as more of a WWE Royal Rumble than an actual debate. But not long after the candidates walked off the stage, things got even more tense during an exchange between MSNBC “Hardball” host Chris Matthews and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA).

Here’s what led up to it:

As she did during the Nevada debate, Warren zeroed in on Michael Bloomberg from the word go on the debate stage in SC. Warren has called the former NYC mayor the “riskiest” of all the remaining Democratic candidates for president.

She seemed especially offended when Bloomberg used the word “sideshows” to describe her repeated references to past controversies involving alleged sexual harassment and discrimination claims made against him by former female employees who signed NDAs.

When Warren got the opportunity to respond, here’s what she said (bolded emphasis added):

WARREN: … and referred to what I talk about as a “sideshow.” You know, this is personal for me. When I was 21 years old, I got my first job as a special education teacher. I loved that job. And by the end of the first year, I was visibly pregnant.

The principal wished me luck and gave my job to someone else. Pregnancy discrimination, you bet. But I was 21 years old. I didn’t have a union to protect me. And I didn’t have any federal law on my side. So I packed up my stuff, and I went home. At least I didn’t have a boss who said to me, “Kill it,” the way that Mayor Bloomberg is alleged to have said…

BLOOMBERG: I never said that. Oh, come on.

WARREN: … to one of his pregnant employees. People want a chance to hear…

There was a lot of crosstalk after that with Bloomberg continuing to deny it and Warren continuing to press the issue. When moderator Gayle King asked her what her evidence was, Warren responded by saying “[the pregnant woman’s] own words.”

After the debate was over, Warren sat down with Matthews for what ended up being another testy back and forth over the accusation against Bloomberg.

Matthews, who has made clear in no uncertain terms that he does not support frontrunner Bernie Sanders, seemed aggravated that Warren was going after Bloomberg and not Sanders. Matthews asked Warren 6 times in a minute and half segment if she really felt Bloomberg said “kill it” and what her evidence was to back up her claim.

Watch:

That Matthews always has an angle he’s working when questioning guests on MSNBC is not exactly a surprise, nor is it necessarily wrong – especially when you consider that Warren has received mostly softball questioning at every single Democratic debate since they started back in June.

But what was infuriating was the fact that Matthews, like every other liberally biased network out there, refused to question Warren on her own claim of pregnancy discrimination, which has been thoroughly debunked in part thanks to contradictory statements Warren herself made in the past.

For that matter, the mainstream media have deemed her claim as off limits for questioning because she’s a woman, and questioning women over these matters is considered “sexist” because Believe All Women and stuff.

I’m not sure which is worse – the fact that Matthews and the rest of the media won’t press her for specifics on her pregnancy discrimination story or the obvious disconnect between her supposed outrage over Bloomberg allegedly telling an employee to abort an unborn child and her unconditional support for abortion on demand with no exceptions.

Fortunately, Warren’s presidential campaign is going nowhere fast, so the likelihood of her getting anywhere close to the Oval Office in a presidential capacity is slim to none. Still, it’s grating that she continues to skate by on this story 1) because she’s a woman and 2) because the media are unabashedly pro-abortion.
