As I’ve said before, Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-HI) often comes across as a couple of fries short of a Happy Meal, if you know what I mean, and she’s proved it over and over again in interview after interview she’s done over the last two weeks during breaks in the Senate’s impeachment trial.

She laughably claimed last week that it was a crazy “conspiracy theory” for Republicans to claim Democrats have been out to impeach President Trump since day one. And over the weekend, she let the cat out of the bag in an interview in which she admitted “there’s a tremendous fear” among Democrats that Trump might get re-elected.

The latest example comes courtesy of a clip shared by The Hill on Thursday as the high drama over whether or not Democrats would have the votes to force McConnell’s hand on witnesses continued to play out on Capitol Hill.

It’s unclear what question she was answering, but it was clear from Hirono’s statement that it had something to do with the witness issue – and the target of her ire was Sen. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY). Here’s what she said:

“… and that is why (sighs) Mitch McConnell is a very ruthless person. He can count the votes. He knows what he needs to do, and this is why he took the last day or so to really put pressure on his caucus so that there would not be that fourth vote on the floor.”

When asked if she knew whether or not McConnell had the votes to avoid the witness fight, Hirono exasperatedly responded by saying she “wouldn’t be surprised. We’re still hoping, because, you know, that’s what [Democrats] do around here.”

I can’t think of a much better ad for McConnell to run on social media than a freebie in which a Democratic Senator basically performs a self-own in backhandedly praising his ability to rein in Republicans in the Senate when it comes to standing by President Trump.

It’s not the first time Hirono has called McConnell “ruthless” and I’m sure it won’t be the last, but this time around it was especially sweet, all things considered.
