Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s (D-MA) presidential campaign is in a decline. Joe Biden and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) are now firmly ahead in national polls, whereas Warren has dropped into third place. In critical early caucus/primary states like Iowa and New Hampshire, the situation isn’t much better for the Massachusetts senator.

So what’s a Democratic candidate to do when their numbers start tanking? Reaffirm their commitment to incarcerating transgender “women” (men) with females in the women’s prison system, that’s what.

During a recent campaign stop in Iowa over the weekend, Warren told a crowd of supporters that transgender women do not belong in a men’s prison:

“You know we were talking earlier about criminal justice system? One of the things we have to think about as a nation: We have to stop putting trans women who are incarcerated into prisons with men where they are at risk. It is our responsibility.”

While Warren’s position isn’t a new one, nor is she the only Democratic presidential candidate to endorse the idea of putting transgender “women” in women’s prisons, it’s a pretty appalling position to take, considering the documented instances in the U.K. of violent trans women offenders who have brutally assaulted or raped women in women’s prisons there.

Britain may have found the solution to the problem by opening a transgender wing in a woman’s prison there in 2019, but it remains to be seen if the idea would float here, especially considering how transgender activists and advocates in the United States insist that creating separate facilities of any sort including bathrooms is also tantamount to discrimination against members of the transgender community.

In any event, as noted earlier, Warren’s campaign is in desperation mode and I guess she feels at this point the way to go about winning over those Democratic primary voters she’s losing is to go even more leftward. With the caucuses and primaries starting in just a few weeks, we’ll find out soon enough if her strategy pays off or backfires.
