In the weeks since Round 2 of Impeachmentpalooza began a month ago, Democrats and mainstream media news outlets have been quick to point out how polls seem to indicate a majority of voters nationally favor an impeachment inquiry.

What they don’t point out, of course, is that the devil is in the details, and those details don’t always provide the voter approval Democrats want you to think they have. A prime example of this is a recent poll released by Suffolk University.

The poll of 1,000 registered voters showed that 36% are in favor of impeachment, 22% were okay with an impeachment inquiry only, and 37% said impeachment proceedings shouldn’t be happening.

But it was the question the poll asked of respondents on the issue of the July Trump/Zelensky call at the center of the impeachment inquiry that should really concern Democrats:

The White House has released a transcript summary of a July 25th phone call in which President Trump encouraged the Ukrainian president to pursue investigations involving Democratic rival Joe Biden, and hacking allegations in the 2016 election. Which comes closest to your view? A) The phone conversation is an impeachable offense. B) The phone conversation was wrong but doesn’t rise to an impeachable offense. C) There was nothing wrong with the phone conversation.

Thirty-eight percent said the conversation is an impeachable offense. Twenty-one percent said the conversation was wrong but not impeachable. And 31% said there was nothing wrong with the conversation. Ten percent were undecided.

In other words, 52% of the American people do no believe Trump’s call was an impeachable offense. This is a nightmare for Pelosi and Schiff, who in spite of saying they’d be willing to lose the House over this issue have very deep concerns about how this will play out among vulnerable House Democrats in the months to come (which is one reason why Pelosi initially balked at the idea of impeachment and largely stayed out of the original faux inquiry for months).

What I would like to see from pollsters going forward are surveys asking how voters feel about the impeachment inquiry process to date in terms of how Democrats have broken with precedent, how a majority of House Republicans have been shut out of the process, and how the President has not been given much of anything in the way of due process rights.

Between last week’s stand-off againt Schiff, and Reps. Lee Zeldin, Jim Jordan, Dan Crenshaw and other Republicans raising the roof on the House leadership’s secretive tactics, the impeachment inquiry has been exposed as the sham it is.

In spite of carefully crafted media/Dem narratives to the contrary, Republican messaging on this process appears to have been moderately successful so far, if what recent polls say are any indication. My only advice for them is this: Get louder.
