It is like clockwork that nearly every time a Democrat is asked a question about the controversial and oftentimes anti-Semitical comments made by certain members of The Squad, they will dodge and deflect to so-called “racist” Republicans instead of issuing unequivocal condemnations of members of their own party.

Such was the case earlier this month when freshman Rep. Sean Casten (D-IL) was asked during a town hall about Rep. Ilhan Omar (MN) and the various anti-Semitic statements she’s made.

Instead of making it clear in no uncertain terms that Omar’s remarks were despicable and anti-Semitic in nature, Casten gave a generic response about how Omar’s statements were “horribly inappropriate” before quickly trying to portray the GOP, especially President Trump and Rep. Dan Crenshaw (TX), as the real bad guys in this argument.

Here’s what he said:

“There are people who are afraid to go to a synagogue because they’re afraid they might be shot. I’m not worried about Ilhan Omar,” Casten said. “I’m worried about attacks from that are coming down from the Right and we are far too quick to condemn hatred when it comes out of a mouth of a brown woman with a head scarf than we are to condemn when it comes out of a mouth of a white supremacist.”

He then pivoted to focus on Crenshaw, who introduced an amendment to the resolution, which Casten referred to as racist.

“The last amendment on the floor that day came from Dan Crenshaw, the new Republican, the Navy SEAL with the eye patch. He came up with an amendment to say we’re going to add a rider on this bill that says that illegals can’t vote,” Casten said. “… why are you doing that? The reason you’re doing that is because you are a racist. Because you are trying to appeal to people who will vote for you if you stand up and oppose brown people.”

Here’s how Crenshaw responded, according to the Daily Wire:

“Rep. Casten, we’ve never met, we’ve never talked. I’ve never insulted you,” he continued. “But instead of articulating a policy position, you resort to petty name-calling, which is a good indication you can’t defend your argument with any sort of intellectual vigor. This is Congress — it’s our job to debate — but please leave you smear tactics at home next time.”

He also followed up with a couple of tweets about Casten, including one recommending people support a Republican who is vying to run against him next year:

Crenshaw’s spokeswoman Kerry Rom went even further, telling the Free Beacon that Casten “should be honest with his constituents and let them know how little he values the power of their vote” in contrast to how he values the idea of illegal immigrants being allowed to vote in U.S. elections.

During his run for Congress last year, Casten equated President Trump to Osama bin Laden and claimed there were “Nazis” working in the White House.

Casten’s 2018 win in Illinois’ 6th Congressional district was the first one by a Democrat in decades. It’s conceivable that this is one seat that has a realistic potential to flip back to red in 2020 with the right candidate.
