Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) has officially added another word to the her “this is code for white supremacy” list: “Communist.”
Conveniently, she came up with this definition after being called a communist by Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) earlier this week.
On Monday, I wrote about the interview Graham did on Fox News in which he was asked his thoughts about Trump’s controversial tweets from Sunday on the so-called “Squad” of AOC, Reps. Ayanna Pressley (MA), Ilhan Omar (MN), and Rashida Tlaib (MI).
Graham said this in response:
“We all know that AOC and this crowd are a bunch of communists. They hate Israel, they hate our own country. They’re calling guards along our border — the Border Patrol agents — concentration camp guards. They accuse people who support Israel of doing it for ‘the Benjamins.’ They’re anti-Semitic. They’re anti-America. Don’t get down. Aim higher. We don’t need to know anything about them personally. Talk about their policies.”
In yet another attempt at shaming into silence those who have the audacity to criticize Her Highness, Ocasio-Cortez posted her take on the word “communist” on her Twitter feed earlier today:
Calling people who believe in democracy, civil + economic rights, and racial justice “communist” has a long + rich history w/ white supremacy in the US.
It was one of the preferred smears against integrating schools, & one of the main attacks segregationists used against MLK Jr: https://t.co/pNdpD8sjWY pic.twitter.com/mTRNj4jjJA

Where did this super-duper flaming hot take come from? The Nation writer Jeet Heer:
Credit where credit is due: the argument that it's okay to be racist against a socialist who is critical of America was pioneered in the 1960s by National Review in their many attacks on Martin Luther King, Jr.
— Jeet Heer (@HeerJeet) July 17, 2019
Where did Heer get it from? Probably Bree Newsome, the militant social justice warrior who climbed up the flagpole at South Carolina’s statehouse to remove the Confederate flag not long after the mass murder of the Emanuel 9 by a white supremacist in June 2015:
Since at least the 1950s, "communist" has become a popular coded word for nigger. Let's be real.
— Bree Newsome Bass (@BreeNewsome) July 15, 2019
No matter who distorted the definition of the word in decades past, the definition of communism is clear.
Newsome was corrected in the comments by numerous people:
Nah, it's a popular word for communists. Commies, like AOC and Ilhan Omar who want productive people to subsidize every aspect of life for those who hate them.

Yeah tons of black folks in Soviet Union and Maoist China. So this makes sense.
— Constitutional kung-FU (@mattgoedde) July 17, 2019
So…when I call Bernie a commie, I'm calling him an n-word?
— Sheik Yerbouti (@YerboutiSheik) July 16, 2019
Setting the record straight did not faze Newsome at all. Nor will it for AOC and Heer. The idea is to completely redefine the word – just like the activst left have redefined words like “racist” and “sexist” and “homophobe” to mean “person who dares to disagree with me.”
AOC is actually naive enough to think people will stop calling her a communist/socialist now that she’s provided an, ahem, alternative definition for the word. I hope she continues to think that.
And I also hope she and the rest of her “Squad” continue to keep talking. They have helped expose the radical extremism of the Democratic party better than any Republican ever could.
