Though comedian Bill Maher is no stranger to controversy, he took his act to new lows on the Friday night broadcast of his “Real Time” show while talking about the controversy involving the pro-life Covington Catholic High School kids and Native American activist Nathan Phillips.

“I don’t blame the kid, the smirk-face kid. I blame lead poisoning and bad parenting. And, oh yeah, I blame the f—ing kid,” Maher said, referring to Nicholas Sandmann who was caught in the center of the controversy.

“What a little p—-. Smirk-face!” he added during the opening monologue of “Real Time with Bill Maher.” “This smirking kid says he was just trying to defuse the situation. Really? Next time you get into a fight … try that.”

Maher ended the jokes about the incident by making an off-color joke about the sex abuse by Catholic priests.

“I do not spend a lot of time around Catholic schoolchildren,” Maher said. “But I do not get what Catholic priests see in these kids.”

This is just nuts. I know comedians are supposed to be edgy and provocative as well as funny, but Maher only gets the provocative part right in this clip, and it’s provocative for the wrong reason. He comes off as woefully uninformed of the situation, especially when you consider that the initial narrative the media sold us about this story turned out to be totally wrong. Not only that, but like disgraced comedian Kathy Griffin, he’s seemingly lost the ability to determine when the humor and edginess cross the line over to inappropriate and wrong.

I’ve also seen leftists suggest “the right” are hypocrites for complaining about how teenager Nick Sandmann and his fellow students have been vilified by the press and the left (but I repeat myself) considering how conservatives treated the Parkland students/gun control activists. This is a faulty comparison: While it’s true that some of the attacks on the Parkland students stepped over the line, a lot of outspoken gun rights activists were justifiably having to defend themselves against vicious accusations by senior student activists like David Hogg and Emma Gonzalez that they were “murderers” who “had blood on their hands” and who “wanted children to die.”

Sandmann and the other Covington Catholic kids, on the other hand, were wrongfully accused of racism and hate, and when the smoke from the outrage machine cleared a lot of journalists and public figures were issuing apologies and deleting their initial knee-jerk tweets. Others, like actress Alyssa Milano and Maher, have made the situation a lot worse by doubling down and further stoking the flames.

And to top off all the smears, Maher cracked a “joke” about how he, “do[es] not get what Catholic priests see in these kids,” a clear reference to the Catholic Church sexual abuse scandals.

Not too long ago I believed that not even Maher would stoop to the level of mocking the horrific experiences of child sexual abuse victims in order to one-up teenage digital lynch mob victims. Clearly, that time has passed.
