The Justice Department is dispatching federal monitors to polling places across four predominantly blue cities in Michigan as voters head to the polls for today’s primary election. Detroit, Hamtramck, Lansing, and East Lansing will all see an influx of staff to help ensure election integrity.
Officials say the move is meant to promote ballot security. Detroit, in particular, has long been a flashpoint for concerns about voting irregularities, and the decision to send monitors there is understandable.
Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon framed the effort as part of a broader push to ensure free and fair elections nationwide.
“Our primary monitoring efforts continue today as we seek to ensure free and fair elections nationwide,” said Dhillon. “The Department of Justice is devoting extensive resources to ensure uniform and nondiscriminatory monitoring. We appreciate the cooperation of these jurisdictions in promoting trust and transparency.”
With ballots being cast today, the presence of federal observers is adding an extra layer of scrutiny to a state that has seen its share of election issues.

Michigan’s 2020 election was marred by widespread allegations of irregularities in Detroit, including late-night ballot dumps, observers being blocked, and thousands of questionable votes that Trump and his allies argued should never have been counted.
Those same concerns have lingered through subsequent cycles, with many conservatives still pointing to Michigan as a state where election integrity remains a serious and unresolved problem.
The move by the DOJ to surge election monitors to the Wolverine State comes just weeks after President Trump, in a primetime address to the nation, said FBI files had detailed "evidence of alleged fraud by a large-scale voter registration operation in Michigan."
"The declassified documents detail how clear evidence of fraud was deliberately buried," a White House fact-sheet reads.
"In one case, an investigation discovered Democrat-aligned canvassers in Michigan forged voter registrations, submitted applications for nonexistent people, and received gift cards based on the volume of fraudulent registrations they produced in the weeks leading up to the 2020 election."

While the media will be lighting their hair on fire over Trump's DOJ sending election monitors to Michigan, it's important to note that both Presidents Joe Biden and Barack Obama did the same in 2016, 2022, and 2024.
Federal election monitoring by the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division has been a bipartisan practice for years.
“Transparency promotes both trust and better behavior in election administration,” said U.S. Attorney Timothy VerHey for the Western District of Michigan. “Our office is always going to be ready to lead in promoting free and fair elections.”
The most closely watched race on the ballot today is the Democratic primary for the open U.S. Senate seat, where progressive Abdul El-Sayed is facing off against moderate Congresswoman Haley Stevens. The race has become a national proxy fight between the party’s far-left extremist flank and its establishment wing.
