An Apple a Day Keeps the Doctor Away.....Really?

"An apple a day keeps the doctor away."

When I was young, that was a common saying. I didn’t know how much reality there was to it. I do know this, though: Eating properly really does help your health physically as well as your brain health. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has been addressing this issue since stepping into office. I don’t think many people realize how many additives and chemicals are in the food that we eat every single day.

When I was a kid, we ate healthier, there was less processing, less sugar, and in general, we ate smaller portions. Over the last 50-60 years, we have been adding a lot of unhealthiness to our food. We've also tended to eat out more and don't cook from scratch as much. All of this led to unhealthier eating habits, unhealthier food, and, in general, more gut health issues. In the last several years, more conversations have included discussions about gut health. I have spent the last couple of years researching and looking deeper into this topic, which seems to be very important.

There has been a lot of attention linking gut health and autism as well. This is something that I have really tried to focus on. Being the parent of an autistic adult and a full-time autism activist, this is not something that I can ignore. Secretary Kennedy understands that the food that we are eating is, more times than not, unhealthy for us. Bringing this awareness to everyone is important because we have to start demanding that our food not be full of chemicals and preservatives. More and more studies are showing us that this is causing health issues.

I applaud the secretary for standing so firm on this, even though many people are trying to fight him on everything he says and does! I really don’t understand why this is controversial. Healthy food should be an issue we all agree on — not just in the autism community, but everyone. Several years ago, I was introduced to an amazing gentleman who spends his entire life focusing on the link between gut health and autism. John Payne is the Chairman and CEO of PURELIFE Health Sciences Group, LLC. He has taught me so much about the importance of gut health for our health. Not just our physical health — our emotional, our mental health is also deeply affected.

I am deeply appreciative of Secretary Kennedy bringing the topic of healthy food, safety of food, and overall health to the forefront. By highlighting this, it has opened doors for those of us in the autism community to look at how gut health needs to be addressed. Research shows that gut health and metabolism play a big role in our moods as well as behavior and brain function. Improving these areas can help us be calmer, more attentive, and more responsive. This is extremely important in the autism community.

There are new studies being conducted to find the connection between the gut and the brain. We need to continue to have these conversations so that the answers become a part of our everyday discussions. By truly understanding the gut/ brain connection, we can find ways to help the autism community on an everyday basis. This can and will open even more doors for new treatments and therapies for autistics

The reason why I love this discussion so much is that we too often focus on children on the spectrum and not enough on adults. We at Team Awesomism focus on autistic adults and are always looking for solutions to help them. If there is truly a connection, and I personally believe there is, between the gut and autism, by changing our eating habits and getting chemicals out of all of our food, we are helping autistic adults.

More research and time are needed to truly dig into how much our gut affects our brain. We need to stand together and demand that our food be safe and full of vitamins, protein, minerals, fiber, and healthy fats. Instead of arguing with each other and pointing fingers, how about we stand together for our health? How is this a bad thing? I don’t see any negative to being healthy.

I applaud John Payne and other researchers. I applaud Secretary Kennedy for their tireless work to help those of us in the autism community find answers. I had someone tell me that they think that these guys are just throwing something against the wall, seeing if it sticks. If they really believe that, then why don’t they go out there and start finding solutions? We need solutions, we don’t need snide comments. I think the gut is a very good place to start. An apple a day may sound cliché, but if eating healthy foods cleans our guts, we will definitely be eating more apples in our house!
