Going to be a busy week on Capitol Hill, and they're kicking off Monday with the following hearings/meetings:
- House Rules — H.R. 7567 – Farm, Food, and National Security Act of 2026; H.R. 2616 – Stopping Indoctrination and Protecting Kids Act; S. Con. Res. 33 – Setting forth the congressional budget for the United States Government for fiscal year 2026 and setting forth the appropriate budgetary levels for fiscal years 2027 through 2035.; S. 1318 – [Foreign Intelligence Accountability Act]
- House Appropriations, Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies Subcommittee — Budget Hearing - National Aeronautics and Space Administration
- Senate Armed Services, Strategic Forces Subcommittee — Hearings to examine Department of Defense missile defense activities in review of the Defense Authorization Request for Fiscal Year 2027 and the Future Years Defense Program
- House Appropriations, Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies Subcommittee — Budget Hearing – Environmental Protection Agency
- House Appropriations, Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies Subcommittee — Budget Hearing – U.S. Department of Labor
- House Intelligence (Permanent Select) — Fiscal Year 2027 Budget Request for the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence and Security (CLOSED)
Not only will it be busy, but it also looks to be a contentious week on the Hill.
FISA Section 702 expires Thursday. The House will try to pass a farm bill and a GOP-drafted budget resolution to allow funding for the Department of Homeland Security, including ICE and Border Patrol. The DHS shutdown has now reached a disastrous 72 days.
White House What's Up
Fresh off a wild Saturday night at the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner and a third assassination attempt, President Trump has a big Monday in store:
- 8:00 AM — THE PRESIDENT participates in Executive Time — The White House
- 1:30 PM — THE PRESIDENT participates in a Policy Meeting — Oval Office
- 4:15 PM — THE PRESIDENT and THE FIRST LADY participate in a Greeting with the King and Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland — The White House
- 4:20 PM — THE PRESIDENT and THE FIRST LADY participate in Tea and a Beehive Tour with the King and Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland — The White House
- 5:30 PM — THE PRESIDENT participates in a Policy Meeting — Oval Office
Late add/update: White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has apparently delayed her maternity leave, as she will be holding a press briefing Monday at 1:00 PM Eastern:

Keeping Up With the Cabinet
Sec. Health & Human Services - Robert F. Kennedy Jr. — Continuing the MAHA movement, Kennedy recently announced that Aldi has agreed to remove a number of unhealthy ingredients from its private-label products.

Full Court Press...
We had a couple of court cases of note on Friday:
- ❌ In National TPS Alliance v. Noem (revocation of TPS for Venezuela, Haiti), Judge Edward Chen (Northern District of California) DENIES admin's motion for stay.
- ❌ In Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services v. Noem (asylum), D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals AFFIRMS district court summary judgment for plaintiffs.
And the Supreme Court is holding oral arguments again this week. On Monday, it's:
- Chatrie v. United States —
- Whether the execution of the geofence warrant violated the Fourth Amendment.
- Whether the exclusionary rule should apply to the evidence derived from the geofence warrant.
- Monsanto Co. v. Durrell — Whether FIFRA preempts a state-law failure-to- warn claim where EPA has repeatedly concluded that the warning is not required and the warning cannot be added to a product without EPA approval.
COMING ATTRACTIONS
King Charles III will address a joint meeting of Congress on Tuesday.
Oral argument in the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) cases will be held before SCOTUS on Wednesday.
MORNING MUSING
"A picture's worth a thousand words," they say. I couldn't help but be reminded of that when, in the aftermath of the WHCD shooting, I saw an image of Secretary of War Pete Hegseth standing over his wife at their table, shielding her and others from the potential threat. He looked alert, in full assess-the-threat mode. Ready to roll if need be.
And then I was reminded of one of the iconic images of his predecessor, Lloyd Austin.
