The nomination of longtime CIA agent Gina Haspel has sparked criticism and controversy among Republicans and the issue spilled over to social media on Thursday. What else can you expect in 2018?

It started with a tweet from Sen. John McCain’s official account that said,

“The torture of detainees in U.S. custody during the last decade was one of the darkest chapters in American history. The Senate must do its job in scrutinizing the record & involvement of Gina Haspel in this disgraceful program.”

Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney quote-tweeted the senior senator saying,

“The Enhanced Interrogation Program saved lives, prevented attacks, & produced intel that led to Osama bin Laden. The techniques were the same as those used on our own people in the SERE program. No one should slander the brave men & women who carried out this crucial program.”

Cheney is clearly proud of this tweet  to a man who endured torture for years at the hands of the Vietcong because she’s since retweeted her tweet and pinned it to her page.

McCain’s daughter and The View cohost, Meghan, wasn’t letting the Cheney’s response and condescension to her father go unremarked on and shut down Cheney with a short but pointed quote tweet of her own of Cheney’s.

Meghan McCain tweeted, “My father doesn’t need torture explained to him.”

Indeed.
