Despite what the Democrats and the media would have the public believe, Republicans voting to bar Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) on Tuesday night is neither outrageous nor particularly rare.

Former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum explained on CNN Wednesday morning that while in office he himself was warned with Rule 19. “Rule 19 was brought up when I was up on the floor, [when he was] going after some folks.”

Senate Rule 19 states “No Senator in debate shall, directly or indirectly, by any form of words impute to another Senator or to other Senators any conduct or motive unworthy or unbecoming a Senator.”

Santorum goes on to explain that to avoid being silenced all you must do is “back off” and amend your speech or alter course to stay within the rules of decorum. “The whole reason for these rules is to keep the temperature down and to keep decorum in the Senate,” he said.

The senator demurred when asked by New Day co-host Alysen Camerota what he’d said to make him have to take a seat. “I’m not necessarily going to revisit those days,” he said. “Sometimes you get a little heated when you get up on the floor and you directly address a senator. You call them out directly on something and they say, “you know you can’t do that.””

The long and short of what happened on Tuesday night is Sen. Warren broke Rule 19. The majority party voted in a collected and respectful manner to end her time on the floor for her actions, as was right.

Regardless, the Republicans handed the Democrats and Sen. Warren their rallying cry for the week and the media an entire news cycle.

Later in the segment, former State department spokeswoman, Jen Psaki, accurately explains why the left will use the Republicans invoking a rule that’s been around in the senate for hundreds of years as fodder to gin up anti-Republican sentiment and raise money off of the action.

“I think in this case, the events that happened last night are a rallying cry for Democrats. Democrats across the country are more energized and excited. And turn about, I wouldn’t compare in exactly the same way. You’re talking about a situation where a female senator is reading the words of a leader.”

Emphasis mine. Democrats will absolutely use this as a way to highlight the “Republicans are anti-woman” narrative they adore so much. If you listen closely you can probably hear the sound of cash rolling in.

No matter the news cycle and spurious allegations Democrats come up with towards Republicans over this, Mitch McConnell did the right thing by not bowing to optics or Elizabeth Warren’s womanhood as reason to not treat the senator the same as anyone who acted similarly.
