Ancient Peruvian Gender Equality

Archaeologists in Peru have discovered the 4,500-year-old mummy of a woman buried near one of the most ancient cities of the Americas, in the coastal ruins of Aspero.

Shady Solís’s team…suggested to the Andina news agency that the objects (seashells, carved desert birds and designs of jungle monkeys) revealed “gender equality, a kind that let both women and men hold leadership roles and achieve a high social status”.

Proof positive that a modern liberal education will lead you to find things that only a modern liberally-educated person could find at an archeological dig.

African Immigrants Stalled in Central American

Africans have recently been arriving in Costa Rica and Nicaragua, hopefully on their way to their ultimate destination of the United States. Unfortunately for them, they’ve been stalled on their quest.

“They say they want to go to the United States and that makes them harder to grant refugee status because they clearly don’t want to stay in Costa Rica,” Solano said.

This will likely turn into additional fodder for Trump’s xenophobic and racist minions, but it also shows the world now knows that the easy way into the U.S. is through Central American and Mexico.

Los Angeles Times Punked by Fake UN Posts

The UN held it’s first General Assembly on narcotics in 18 years. The Los Angeles Times reported that UN was recommending decriminalizing drug use. It turns out that they were fooled be a fairly elaborate hoax based on a tweet by “Kevin Campo”, who it turns out is a combination of two real UNODC spokespersons, Kevin Town and Carlos Gomez del Campo.

“I was catching up on coverage coming out of Ungass, because it’s been a busy week with Ungass itself, and 4/20, and various other marijuana-related things,” said Tom Angell, a marijuana activist and journalist for Marijuana.com, who first investigated the hoax.

When marijuana.com has to do your research for you, you’re doing it wrong.

New School in Pakistan Named after Boy Martyr

A new school for enslaved children in Pakistan is named after boy martyr Who rescued thousands From bonded labor.

“We chose to name our school after Tim Iqbal Masih as his short life has been an inspiration to our group. His commitment to save others and in so doing sacrificing his own life is a message to us all,” BPCA Chairman Wilson Chowdhry said in a statement. “Freedom from oppressors will always come at a cost and so often martyrs are forgotten. We wanted his desire to emancipate other victims to be be remembered, that it might cement a place for acceptance of the beleaguered Christian minority in Pakistan and inspire generations of humanitarians yet to come.”

A fitting tribute to a boy who lived a difficult childhood and turned that into a life of helping others.

That’s it for your Sunday Water Cooler.
