It's pretty sad to see what is unfolding in New York City. I worked there; I went to school there. And unfortunately, I don't have a lot of hope that the Republicans are prepared to beat the Democratic Socialist, Zohran Mamdani.
The anti-Mamdani folks might have a chance if they were all able to coalesce behind one of the other three candidates. But that doesn't seem to be happening. The two other Democrats have significant baggage, although, to be sure, former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is more moderate politically than Mamdani, and Mayor Eric Adams would also be better.
However, right now, Mamdani is leading in the polling, and it's not looking good. He's young and he speaks well, but his policies are nuts. Will New York City residents understand that in time? I don't know, I don't have a lot of hope that they will.

But he didn't help himself when he went to "Men's Day" in Brooklyn, where they have different activities and events on the streets. That's when he allowed himself to be talked into doing the bench press.
The New York Post said that the weight was 135, which isn't a lot, especially for a 33-year-old young man. But the Post said he struggled to execute a single unassisted bench press rep as he tried to perform for the crowd.

He had assistance from a spotter (who looked like a strong fellow) with the bar. I don't know if the loud guy who encouraged him to do it thought he was helping him. He just kept saying that this was how you go up in the polls. I don't think this is going to help him very much when it comes to that.
Many on X were not impressed by his performance on "Men's Day." Men generally thought the weight was rather light, and many of them mocked Mamdani over it.
If there was ever a metaphor for how he would fail, if he became mayor, that might be it. The Post joked, "At least we know he wouldn't be a strongman leader." It's a perfect video demonstrating the weakness of the Democrats right now.
Mamdani doesn't have the ability to carry the heavy weight that being a leader in New York City would require. Unfortunately, his policies are far worse than any weakness he might have on weight, and right now, it looks like New York City is going to take a big hit.
He overestimated his abilities; it's the same with his politics.
