As Twitter head Elon Musk had previously announced, he was going to remove the Twitter legacy blue checks unless people signed up for Twitter Blue or registered as a verified organization or affiliated account.
He left it for 4/20 I think because he thought it would be funny on “weed day.”
Tomorrow, 4/20, we are removing legacy verified checkmarks. To remain verified on Twitter, individuals can sign up for Twitter Blue here: https://t.co/gzpCcwOXAX
Organizations can sign up for Verified Organizations here: https://t.co/YtPVNYypHU
— Twitter Verified (@verified) April 19, 2023
The tweet has now received more than 69 million views.
But I think it’s safe to say that many on the left who relied on that checkmark to feel “special,” “elite,” and above the common people are flipping out about it now.
We may already have the most over-the-top reaction from someone claiming to be a freelance journalist for the NY Times (but might actually be a parody account). So you know where she stands:
Elon thinks this is a funny joke. As a former verified account who lost their blue checkmark, I know how dangerous this really is. People are going to die. https://t.co/5HJkDLmko5

Exactly how is anyone going to die from this? They’re certainly not going to die from not seeing a blue check on the account of this “journalist.”
Let’s hear more crying from the execrable “journalist” Aaron Rupar.
keeping track of notifications will be much harder now that you can't filter them by verification. but whatever. let this place burn.

Some are trying to adjust to the nakedness of no nice elitist checkmark. Here’s Keith Olbermann trying to pretend with an arrow in his profile. That’s pretty hilarious that he’s so desperate.

This lady Tara Dublin is so desperate to tell you how special she is she put a “legacy verified” all over her profile. This profile is a festival of leftist nonsense.
— Dr. Nickarama (@nickaramaOG) April 21, 2023
Then just to show you what a nasty human being she is, she tweets about Elon’s starship blowing up.
What a perfect visual metaphor for everything Elon Musk does #SpaceX

I have to say I find it amusing that someone like Hillary Clinton no longer has a blue checkmark. But as I told one of my RedState colleagues, it’s not hard to identify her — just follow the holier-than-thou sanctimony.
In other news, @elonmusk increased his life insurance policy. https://t.co/OhexhslL0N

It was also pretty funny that some were pointing to the Pope’s blue check being removed as well, to add to how horrible this all was. But I don’t think the Pope gives a darn about a blue check. Plus, these are people who don’t care about anything he has to say, except when they can pull him out and use him for their arguments. He may be more liberal than Pope John Paul II, but he’s still very much against abortion. They don’t care what he has to say about that.
Some threw a fit by calling to block those who still were “verified.”
legacy verified blue checks are gone
'Verified' notifications are now a spam filter! feel free to block everyone in there pic.twitter.com/WpWiKCNXLw
— Matt Binder (@MattBinder) April 20, 2023
If they did that, they would end up blocking every government agency and things like the police, who generally still have the verification.
SCOTUSblog (which tweets about SCOTUS opinions) said they were leaving because they didn’t feel they should have to pay for it. But then they said people could find them on their blog and TikTok. When they claim to have a problem with paying money to Twitter and they’re concerned about “direction” but they’re not concerned about the Chinese control of TikTok or the direction of that, you know you can’t trust what they have to say.
But hey, if they don’t like it, make your own Twitter, isn’t that what they told us? So why are they flipping out about it now?
